AMO/MEBA circling MMP? APL news

Hard to find anything re Osprey Ship Management without paywall. Any links?

Does this mean AFL-CIO officially decided that those are AMO ships? I know MMP and AMO were going through arbitration which should decide the whole debacle. Or is this just the MOU because the new ship is officially gonna be reflag in a couple weeks.

I think these are actually AMO ships.
Were they still discussing on that issue?

I think MMP’s argument is that Osprey is a subsidiary of APL and they have jurisdiction regarding any APL vessels. AMO’s argument is that this is a subsidiary of CMA-CGM and its new tonnage. I might have the details wrong though…

If I recall correctly, they operated the American Cormorant which was AMO.

Well it will be interesting to see the details of the AMO and MEBA agreement regarding these vessels.
Fair to say that it is most likely not going to be MMP no matter what there argument is. MEBA could easily say we are we are working with AMO and not going to help crew them if you put MMP mates on. MMP doesn’t have the engineers to crew even one vessel. Let alone 20.

I don’t think that’s necessarily the be all end all some might think it is.

With regards to MMP’s jurisdiction claim that Osprey is an arm of APL and not a direct subsidiary of CMA CGM, would this decision also effect the unlicensed unions to man those ships? APL is manned by SUP and MFOW in addition to SIU on their ships.

Just a thought.

Didn’t Osprey exist prior to CMA’s acquisition of APL? If so, wouldn’t this claim be pretty solid?

The expanding working relationship between AMO and MEBA is exciting news! I think it is a strategic and smart move that will lead to more jobs for both Unions as the US flag fleet expands.

This is probably the worst route APL / CMA-CGM could’ve chosen to expand the US flag fleet with in terms of retaining mariners. Instead of a Baltic, Mediterranean, Caribbean, or South American run they chose the route going to two of the sh*ttiest countries in the world Pakistan and India!

If the pays there people will do it

I wish somehow someway all three unions decide to finally fucking merge. As an MMP member for almost 10 years now my classmates who are AMO and MEBA would love for this to happen. Too bad those in leadership can’t figure it out. Seems like AMO and MEBA is closer to joining.

SIU is supposedly crewing all the unlicensed

I don’t think MMP will be able to do ever join the other two unless MMP’s financial situation changes and they vote out their current leadership. MMP’s current leadership has been pretty hostile towards the MEBA in general. Especially MEBA’s deck officers. MEBA deck officers would rally behind hell no vote to an MMP merger but yes to an AMO.
It sucks too because a lot of MMP members I know don’t share their leaderships radical stance towards MEBA and AMO.

Maybe one day. If the relationship continues to improve and be beneficial.

Yeah I don’t know many members now who share the same feelings regarding merger as the current leadership. At the end of the day we all want more ships and better pay. I have best friends at AMO and MEBA and we all just want to do better.

MMP needs to STFU about what happened in 1984 — on that same note, I’ve seen the greenest weenie of a 3AE fresh out of school drone on about what happened in 1984 with pride, which makes it seem like that’s part of their new membership familiarization. Everyone has their own opinions, experiences, etc… enough already.

99% of us weren’t even there or alive yet… everyone needs to get over the events of 41 years ago and move ahead already. As long as the story is continuously reborn and allowed to grow new legs the coals will glow.

The entire situation of having multiple unions in such a small industry is a farce.

On a separate note, if it’s not the NLRB deciding this case, but rather the AFL-CIO, would it not be reasonable to assume that MMP might actually win this case as they did with the Guam and Pasha ships?

I’m curious why APL’s relationship with MMP is soured but not Maersk, Matson, etc. Does this all stem from the 2 third mate dispute? Or is there something that goes beyond that?

They won with Guam/Pasha because those ships were not “new tonnage”. They were replacing existing ships on that run. These ships they may be able to argue are new tonnage and therefore there’s no conflict.

There are obvious advantages of having separate unions for deck and engine as well as disadvantages. I do appreciate that contract bargaining would improve if both deck and engine were the same union, if current union leadership and goals were similar for both sides and they would sit at the same table.

As a Group 1 MEBA Engineer, I do not want to see MEBA merge with AMO. I gain nothing from it and the shortage of qualified talent currently helps me more than it hurts me. I recognize that this may change in the future but I don’t want them to merge. MM&P is broke. Even MEBA wouldn’t consider merging with them.

Broke as in financially? Or broke as in incompetency? Just trying to get a grasp on why so many on here seem to be so anti-MMP. Although I’ve never sailed with MMP, during school and my career thereafter MMP was always talked about as being thee go-to union for us deckies. Have times changed? Or is there a bias? They seem to have a lot of good jobs.
