AISMixer — an open project for AIS data collection and distribution

Hello everyone,

I’d like to introduce AISMixer, a project I have been developing around AIS data collection, processing and distribution.

The basic idea is simple: AIS receivers are often installed at different locations and connected through very different networks. AISMixer provides a way to collect those AIS/NMEA 0183 streams, clean and deduplicate the data, preserve source information, route it where needed, and securely transport it between remote stations and receiving systems.

The project can be used with fixed coastal AIS stations, mobile installations and other environments where AIS data needs to be moved reliably between a receiver and one or more applications or services.

It currently includes the aismixer processing and routing service and nmea_sproxy, a small station-side component that can take AIS data from network or serial/USB receivers and forward it to another site.

One of the reasons I’m posting here is that I would particularly value feedback from people who actually work with AIS equipment in real maritime environments.

I’m interested in experiences with different AIS receivers, installation setups, unreliable or mobile network connections, remote coastal stations, and generally the practical problems that appear outside the lab.

The project is actively developed, and contributions are welcome — field testing, bug reports, feature requests, documentation, ideas, or code.

I’d be very interested to hear how people here currently collect and distribute AIS data, and what problems you encounter in real installations.
