AI in shipping and onboard ships

So just sit back in the Captain’s chair and relax.
PS> But remember to feed the parrot when it tells you to.

What is Agentic AI?:
Agentic AI is the overall concept of artificial intelligence systems that can act independently and achieve goals. AI powered agents are the individual components within the system that execute tasks.

One of the mates I work with pays for the ChatGPT Plus. I have to admit the guy does seem smarter & better inform around the galley table. I suggested they build a kiosk in the bosuns locker or outside the door of the ships office to cut out the middleman/mate for when people go looking for answers for stuff. Prehaps ChatGPT could make a good 4th Mate?

Chat gpt will feed you what you want, generalizations, and straight lies, its a scoundrel and a psychopath. Honestly reminds me of pre internet bullshitter conmen who knew everything. Dont trust it, confirm all sources and rewrite your own emails. If you let chatgpt have the final say you WILL be caught looking foolish at best. I use it more often then i would like but the bullshit is thick. People who dont think systematically and dont have a base of knowledgeable and experience, basically a parrot in a man suit, get dunked on by AI. A man argued with me that AI is the devil, im starting to lean that direction. I see AI in the bosses emails, my favorite books and guys with over confidence spitting rehashed half truths. Dont get lazy, do the work.

Do we truly understand how dangerous this AI shyte is?

I just hope this new agentic ship management AI is better than the LLM that spits out results at the top of my Google search, because that shit is obviously wrong more often than it’s right.

I also look forward to them explaining how they plan to have their LLM turn wrenches on deck when needed.

You mean like this Deck wrench?

I don’t think anybody is taking about AI taking away ALL manual tasks, on deck, in the engine room, or in the galley.

Robots MAY do some of the mundane tasks now done manually, but there will still be some things that require “human ingenuity”.

What AI can do is plan the work, keep records and possibly improve the efficiency and safety on ships and other work places.

If all they wanted to do was improve productivity and reduce the amount of administrative overhead (imagine if an AI could be relied upon to process overtime sheets!) then I’d welcome it with open arms. But, most of what I see is “how soon can we use this hallucinating energy-devouring synthesis of both relevant and irrelevant info to replace trained professionals?”

Maybe if we’re lucky the AI will just say no.

From the article:

“AI assists, it doesn’t decide. Responsibility and judgment always remains with people.”

Nope.

The AI hustlers have pitched to the spreadsheet jockeys that “agentic AI” can replace humans in decision-making roles, and the spreadsheet jockeys, ever eager to squeeze every last dime out of their operations, are hot to try it. Look into the latest Amazon Web Services outage if you doubt me.

Separation of authority and responsibility is classic management stupidity in any walk of life, and always leads to dysfunction, i.e…

  • conferring authority on one who is not responsible for consequences of exercising that authority,"
  • while imposing responsibility for those consequences on another who has no authority over the first!

What could possibly go wrong?
As long as you remember that “The key word here is support”

We do not.
