Im looking to upgrade my current 200t NC mate to 500t NC mate. And have been told that because my current seatime letter says deckhand, it wont qualify for my 90 days needed as a AB for my 500T. MY question is when I upgraded my AB special to AB limited,my seatime letter didnt state AB.

Time for AB does not have to be as an AB. In your case the time for Mate 500 NC requires 90 days to be on vessels over 50 GRT as an AB so that is why they want it stated on your letter.
If I recall correctly, the requirement is for 90 as AB or equivalent while holding an AB. I got around this by providing my job description as an argument that my duties where those of an AB, not an OS, even though my seatime letter said deckhand.

AB special to AB limited doesn’t require time as an AB, time as a deckhand is acceptable.
