AB( OSV) vs AB Special
What’s the difference between AB OSV and AB Fish?
AB OSV is only good on OSVs and AB fishing is only good on fishing vessels.
So AB special is good for any tonnage but not for more than 50% of required ABs on vessels over 500GRT. See https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/46/7312.
Good catch.
What’s the difference between a AB OSV and other AB’s?
AB-OSV only requires 120 (12 hour) days of seatime. It’s only valid on OSVs.

Like everything else to do with American OSVs, Jeaux Boss hired enough retired USCG officers, and made enough campaign contributions to politicians to get anything he wants. He wanted to be able to hire anyone that showed up at his office begging for a job and turn him into a nearly instant AB.

Always get what you can when you can. Never know when you may be out of a job and an ab OSV is needed somewhere.

One is a bullshit endorsement OSV operators had created to create cheap quick labor and needs to be discontinued. The other AB billets follow a logical time and route progression to expand scope.

The amount of sea time required, and the vessels they can work on. The sea service requirements are in Title 46 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Section 12.403.

It should be obvious, the vessels they can work on. Note that neither requires enough sea service to meet the STCW requirement for Able Seafarer-Deck.

Pssshhh… Wishes we could fish? I fish out their all the time!!
