I just completed testing for and received my 500 Master and am now considering 1600 Mate to simplify an eventual 3rd Mate. I am wondering if I can use my Master study materials instead of purchasing all new specifically for Mate. I know Rules of the Road is the same but what about Deck General or Deck Safety? I do have some stability and tide problems to work and if the other tests are close I’ll just use what I already have from L. E. Fletcher’s LAMPI.

Maybe I’m not remember correctly, but if you get something like a year or so of sea time on that shiny, new 500-ton master can’t you just upgrade to a 1600-ton master, without testing, as long as the sea time is over 100-GRT? When you go to the REC, at least in my experience, all of the limited tonnage license tests say “500 OR 1600 TON MASTER OCEANS”, or mate, or near coastal, or whatever the case may be, but as far as I know they all say “500 OR 1600 TON…” Once you have the one, I would think it would just be a sea time upgrade to go to the other. Now, as for the eventual 3/M unlimited, that is a monster unto itself and another conversation for another time…
You have to take mates exams as the master exams are different. Whether 500/1600/3rd he will have to test at one point or another.
But if he has his 500-ton Master already, shouldn’t it just be a sea-time upgrade to go to 1600-ton Master, as long as it’s the same route?
Yes I could just put in the seatime and upgrade, but since I work even time that will take awhile. In the meantime I wanted to take advantage of my recent schooling and take the mates exam so I can later get a 3rd Mate ticket. I would rather NOT lay out extra money for all new study materials if my Master’s study aids will suffice. The Rules of the Road module is the same, but the other subjects have different module numbers. They might be very different or they might be virtually the same. Anyone have an insight to how different the Mate exam is compared to the Master’s exam?

Why don’t you subscribe to Lapware for a month? That will give you the opportunity to practice on the correct modules. IIRC Modules 141-147 are for third mate. There will be some differences from Master 500, but probable 80 percent of it is the same.
