I have seen plenty of folks go from MMP to the oil fields and back again over the years without an issue. It isn’t considered competition.
If you’re in one of the unions, I wouldn’t worry about it. But like someone else said, don’t go bragging about it… just to be safe.

That’s on a drillship/ modu?
National oil field or International oil fields?
$135k/yr? Sorry, who in the oil patch is now paying $740/day for an assistant DPO? Asking for a friend with a few extra decades experience than a green 3M & is tired of wage cuts over the last 5 years…

I was wondering the same thing, I don’t work in the patch but I’ll be jumping ship for that.

I’m in the GOM with a 2M & DPO-unlimited making $425/day at 28/14. I was (am) grateful for a job as a fresh 3M (a lot of friends on the beach or driving trucks); I’ve seen $600/d but that was years ago when oil was $120/bbl. What does the new generation of academy grads think is a “livable wage”?
Oh, and who is paying $740/d today for a limited DPO? really?

Pacific & Diamond Drilling for a few…several other companies that operate 6th gen drillships. Most are on par. Quantifying by dayrate isnt something that drilling companies do…that’s boat operator stuff.
It’s not so easy getting a position without experience since contracts are structured around 5 years in position experience, but we do hire 3rd mates as ABs and facilitate a bridge route and that’s supported by most clients.
The academies meet this need best as most young recent grads are willing to pound the decks.

How does this work with academy grads on the engineering side who have a lot less trouble sailing on their license?

A good portion of my graduating class (deck side) worked beneath their license either on 100 ton cruise ships, on tugs, or on deck on something larger. Some still are and love it. I can’t think of any engineers that I got out with that have done the same.

Well when you’re at the Academy you are constantly told about how rich all the grads are, how big their new houses are, how awesome their new F350 is, and how many surf trips they’ve taken to the Maldives or wherever, so yeh you expect a living wage of minimum $100K a year when you get out…

The ones that apply…of course. That’s why they applied and why they were hired.
Between my camper, boat, vehicles and 2 bedroom house, I can’t afford all the cool stuff you’re talking about!

I don’t mean to hijack this gents thread but what about crewing agencies? Have you seen any of the major drilling operators actually hire third mates and DPOs from them?

Are you a recent grad? Do you know anyone who finished ahead of you who works in the GOM?

Not from my vantage point since we haven’t used agencies, but I do know a few that were hired after doing temp work for Spencer Ogden. All were laidoff with alot of experience, but got back on after doing temp work for a little while.

I don’t think 100k is an unreasonable salary for a 3/m with DP and a year or two of experience. Considering the amount we invest to get these licenses, the sacrifices we make to work at sea, and the risks we’re exposed to, 6 figures seems appropriate. Now I certainly feel bad for everyone that took paycuts and isn’t making that with more experience. Best of luck to all, and pray for raises!
