I have a 100 ton master and have enough days at sea for a Mate of Towing. I know all the requirements needed. The only thing that I can’t figure out or seem to get a straight answer about is what the tonnage restrictions are. On the Mate of towing checklist, it lists all of the requirements and states “if stcw II/I is not held, issue stcw for mate of T/V with 200gt limitation. Only BST required for STCW II/3”
Also 46CFR 11.465e does not imply a tonnage limitation.
So I guess my question is… Will they issue me a 200 ton mate of tow or is it under the general restrictions of my current Master’s license? I’ve been getting conflicting reports from various people, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
U need to get ur 200 ton mate before they issue u ur mate of towing. Did u take the apprentice mate class?

Not if he has 3 years of experience as Master. If he does, he can get Mate of Towing Vessels with 30 days on a tug and completion of the TOAR.

When going that route you will also need to complete the apprentice mate exam.
I have over three years of service as master of vessel so you are correct. That is the route that I am taking. I have taken the apprentice mate exam and 200 ton upgrade. I’m working on my TOAR now. But what are the days at sea requirements to get the 200 ton upgrade?
