I agree with this larger point that they shouldn’t have to be one-dimensional, but in actuality they do have to be one-dimensional. You have to keep things simple in order for the sheep to have something to hate on and complain about.
Yea that’s DeSantis’ entire platform. All he does is talk about woke this and woke that.
This is somewhat analogous to using more than one method of navigation. In both cases it’s a matter of not relying on a single source.
In my experience using twitter, newsletters and a RSS feed of a few blogs gives a broader range of diverse views. It does often lead to less certainty, same as when a fix doesn’t cut or the radar picture is cluttered.
For example here’s Kevin Drum on the mask story mentioned on another thread.
And yet he continues to get elected… Seems to indicate that his constituents agree that ‘woke this and woke that’ is a bad thing and needs to be countered.
As one of his constituents I am sick of his “woke” BS. Additionally many of his voters are retired people who are not Florida natives and sure as heck don’t have children in Florida schools. My guess? He will be elected senator like the former governor Scott whose company was found guilty of one of the biggest Medicare frauds in history. There is a reason there are so many jokes about “Florida Man”. The state seems to be a magnet for real estate scams, fortune tellers and ignorance.
Off subject but someone correct the numbers if I have it wrong: With a budget of $90 million/year for roughly 1050 students, isn’t that a cost to taxpayers for a four year degree @ nearly $350k per grad? That’s about 3 1/2 times the cost of a four year degree at Maine Maritime. Doesn’t seem to woke on the fiscal responsibility level.
And yet the majority of the entire panhandle of Florida, which is primarily native Floridians, love them some Desantis! I can’t wait to vote for him!
Yes, those retired voters are often called ‘voters.’ I mean, it’s Florida, Heaven’s Waiting Room. This is not a new phenomen. The influx of pre-retirement age voters is, however, and they seem to be voting similarly.
Having skin in the game, like kids, sadly is not a criterion for voting. Perhaps it should be. I’d be ok with the old ways, where, say only landowners could vote. I mean, I don’t like renters having a say on my property tax, right?
This whole kulturkampf thing is fun.
Fair enough, but you’re obviously in the minority. Perhaps California is more in line with your values:
Don’t forget to add ambulance chasing lawyers.
My values are not specific to any state. To be clear I voted for DeSantis when he ran for the first time due to his promise to fight the big money interests and clean up the Indian River Lagoon which has been polluted and politicized for many years by big money sugar interests. I thought I’d give this east coast Yale and Harvard elite a chance. But once elected he failed to follow through and instead went off on his campaign to run for president. In my home county due to DeSantis’s policies one woman in my county of Martin has gotten many, many books taken off the library shelves. Now books that have been read for many years have to be reviewed by the school board because ONE parent from this “Moms of Liberty” thought they were inappropriate. School boards have better things to do.DeSantis needs to resign as governor and run for president, which is all he has been doing anyway.
Are we talking removing Huckleberry Finn or are we talking Bobby Mapplethorpe’s Guide to Better Rimjobs when we’re talking about books removed from the primary school library?
More like Huckleberry Finn. And some book about 2 penguins who adopted a baby penguin. Very controversial stuff.
Remember Desantis has the cruise industries %&# so far down his throat I am amazed he can breathe. What do you think he will do for the Jones act?
He actually was no friend of the cruise industry during the height of Covid. He sacrificed them on the altar of the hotel industry to save Orlando and Miami before Disney’s CEO crossed the woke line and poked him. It’s all Disneys fault for the woke agenda we are dealing with from the Gov in Fl.
Please say that statement was a joke. Ayatollah DeSantis is banking millions donated by ignorant rednecks and neofascists who want to turn the state and the entire nation into a dictatorial theocracy.
It’s hard to feel sorry for the stupid people who will lose the most when their authoritarian wet dreams come true. The man is a fraud (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soWggOxfN0s) and a threat to democracy and personal freedom. He is the real life model of “Florida Man” and a laughing stock when he is not actually causing real harm. His hissy fit with Disney and moronic stunt will cost Florida taxpayers around a billion dollars, that’s a lot of pickup truck payments.
“Woke”? maybe it’s time for the cult followers to wake up while it’s still legal to even think.
Well, thank you for the ringing endorsement of gCaptain
Well, start a Substack.
You forgot the Hitler wannabe angle, or is that only for people you don’t like.
How dare you question his analysis?? I mean, there’s a YouTube video about it and everything… It might even officially be ‘a thing’ at this point!
