Why is VLCS Ever Given Anchored Great Bitter Lake?

The ship is on an lake in Egypt and arrest order has been issued by an Egyptian court. The vessel cannot just leave and sail to a “more convenient port”, no matter if a lien is filed on behalf of the crew, the cargo owners, or the ship’s registered Owner (whoever that may be)

Unless SCA allow her to join a convoy, either North bound or South bound, she cannot get out of the Great Bitter Lake, which they will not do as long as she is arrested by an Egyptian court.

This has now become a matter of prestige for SCA and the Egyptian Government, not a matter of international maritime law.

Being Panamanian register I don’t think they’ll get much support from the flag state either.

Yes if cargo insurers gets together and put up a bond for USD 1 Bn. she would PROBABLY be released and allowed to proceed on her voyage.
How many of them are there? Could many enough manage to agree to come up with a common bond?

It’s time for Evergreen to call Max Hardberger.

My first chuckle of the day Lee!

Egyptian prestige … that has to be the oxymoron of the year.

I wonder how long Egyptian prestige would last if underwriters tacked on a SCA surcharge substantial enough that it creates a virtual blockade of the canal?
