This forum is fading. It seems the guys who populated the forum since its inception are the only ones left. I value the younger folks views on the shipping and offshore business so I’m interested in where they went. Where did they go?
Still here.
You, and a large portion of the top contributors on here ran them the F off with your embedded, anti-right political posts. At first it was union vs. oilfield. Now, it’s democrat vs. republican hell on here just like X/Twitter. The only reason i’m still here is to make sure one of y’all weiner schnitzels doesn’t say anything too stupid about oilfield. Say it ain’t so.
Things have gotten weird around here with all the crazies.
Agree with the 2 previous comments. It’s tiresome rolling through long posts that were probably generated in a Russian troll farm somewhere & hundreds of twisted, obsessed comments about DJT? It’s a dang shame too because otherwise the latter seem like a decent group of guys. Also, I’ve noticed co-workers, friends & family scrolling a bunch on their phones. Apparently Tic-Toc, YouTube & FB scrolling is addictive. Maybe other forms of social media gets prioritized due to social media habits?
Yep, if someone wants to join a political slugfest forum, Gcaptain ain’t it. Not enough instant gratification clips/videos.
Considering that there are only 2 or 3 threads currently running in the scuttlebutt room that match the issue that you claim exists, it seems like your complaint might fall under the troll category.
No one gets “run off” anything here, they may not like what they choose to read but that’s a personal problem isn’t it?
I agree with both of your points here. But that is what the OP asks when he started this thread. People’s personal problems with the forums content has caused them to be disinterested & stop contributing/reading. So perhaps it’s a forum problem too? In my 15 years of visiting this site there’s been countless thread titles & subjects that first didn’t appeal to me. But after clicking on the thread & doing a little reading, something or someone caught my attention & I enjoyed it. I seldom do that anymore. I now have dozens of threads that I don’t click on. Too much political content & derangement to even bother checking those threads for me. Hence the O.P asking where has people gone.
That describes the current polarization, cult members only want to see, hear, or read what matches their own beliefs and they want to shut down any source of conflicting thought or information. Rather than openly call for censorship of material that disturbs them (except of late night comedians), they tend to suggest some subtle cause and effect that really doesn’t exist.
“sigh”. So you think “current polarization, cult members only want to see, hear, or read what matches their own beliefs and they want to shut down any source of conflicting thought or information” is the answer to the O.P’s question about reduced gCaptain Forum site traffic? Yea, that’s probably it. You hit the nail on the head Steamer.
There are some good points in this thread and it is probably safe to say that we are all on here for different reasons. Incident analysis tends to polarise the older, global and more experienced brigade (“Ever Green”, “Ever Fortune”, “Dali” etc) whereas operational, training, union membership, Jones Act matters etc tends to attract the younger US members.
I am surprised that the political commentary is allowed to run as long as it, invariably, does. Either way, I find this to be a valuable forum.
I’m not complaining about anything. A question was asked and I came up with a viable theory. I’m just calling it like I see it. Go back and look your and the OP’s last six posts or so. Gotta get that political dig in on most of them. It gets old. Maybe space it out a little? Don’t get me wrong, if an outright “Biden bad Trump good” post comes though, free game. Otherwise we get it. You don’t like Trump.
Google ‘Are forums dying?’ and you’ll find the decline is across the internet, in all subjects. Like the lack-of-manpower issue, there is a tendency towards thinking it is industry-related, when in fact it is just part of a larger trend.
I don’t like liars, scammers, fraudsters, felons, bullies, war criminals, sociopaths, virulent narcissists, and corrupt politicians. I think since Trump falls into all of those categories, you are correct.
It’s simply the Pro and anti Trump that puts me off.
I did enjoy coming on here and seeing the shipping news and taking part in the accident analysis,Offshore views, and general shipping news.
It now seems that every thread descends into a political, pro or anti Trump slanging match.
I fear for the future of this forum as there will come a day when Trump will be gone, hallelujah, and there is nothing for you to slag each other off about.
I have called a few of you hysterical and I sincerely stand by that.
See, there you go again. Nice lobbying. We all know how you feel and have known for a long time. If you want more users around here, you and about six other forum members should avoid injecting politics into so many threads. Or not.
I think this is it in general. Most all forums are dying. They had a time and place, but short form media has replaced what forums once were.
That is freakin hilarious!
Good point. I find all iterations of YouTube invaluable and if you choose to get involved in commentary…..you can.
Hopefully we are getting peoples opinions here and not ai opinions
Thats a plus here
