Sorry, have been away for a bit. Yes, they are US-flagging Sun Coast in January. My understanding is they are confident in the TSP program and irrc have applied for 3 positions - Sun Coast, but also their current MSP tankers - Mykonos and Santorini. Interestingly, Military Sealift Command/DoD put out tenders for US-flagged tankers (non-Jones Act) to help support the decommissioning of Red Hill fuel depot in Hawaii. My understanding is OSG has applied for those jobs as well. March is when the TSP and Red Hill awards will be announced, from what I have heard. I expect OSG to put out public statements at that time.
Along with email blasts from the MEBA halls saying “Please take OSG jobs! Moar incentives for 1ae’s to get PIC”. Of course, no worries about finding brainwashed company men to be abused for the mate slots.
OSG Sun Coast, currently moored in Corpus, changed to US flag today.
Last day to apply for the TSP billets was early this week. Now I guess it’s a waiting game to see what companies snag them.
Anyone have solid info on who applied ?
OSG certainly did. Mykonos and Santorini already MSP, so hopefully no issues moving to TSP. OSG US-flagged the Sun Coast in order to qualify for TSP too. I would imagine Maersk has an eligible tanker as well. Many US-flagged tankers are too old to apply though. The other opportunity out there for US-flag vessels is the MSC Red Hill charters. My understanding is OSG applied all three of the ships I just mentioned for those slots as well. From what I have heard the Red Hill and TSP announcement will be mid-late March.
The Maersk Misaki is now the Yosemite Trader. Not sure why the name change, but that was their one tanker on hand with 5 years of life left. There should be a new tanker coming online shortly to replace some of the aging ones.
TSP slots announced and OSG got the three slots they applied for. Mykonos and Santorini already in MSP, so transition to TSP makes sense. Sun Coast was US-flagged recently in order to be a candidate for TSP, and got a slot as well. Now we wait for MSC/DoD to announce the Red Hill awards. My understanding is OSG applied for some of those slots as well. Hopefully announcements will be out by the end of this month.
That’s been sitting there at anchor off of Borneo for several years now. That would be one hell of a shipyard period to bring her back. That, coupled with the fact that those ships are very purpose-built, and that the plants begin to have trouble in warmer waters, it may not be the best investment when compared to just building a new one in China or something in flagging it in US under the supposed TSP. The Frontier might make a good lightering/offshore storage vessel, however.
Well hopefully MMP/MEBA companies bid on the next 10 TSP billets that are supposedly because they lost out big time. I can see a problem with the government relying on one union that’s struggling to attract PIC mates and engineers in general.
That is a total of 160 jobs!
Here is the break down of the new billets/ jobs.
Granted some of the ships have already been US flag for awhile but still.
AMO- 112 new jobs (56 mates, 56 engineers)
MEBA- 24 new jobs ( 0 mates, 24 engineers)
MMP- 0 new jobs (0 mates, 0 engineers)
Non-union 24 new jobs (24 mates, 0 engineers)
That’s a big assumption, considering that the 3 OSG ships already do not carry 2 Third Mates. If these ships are going to be foreign built and therefore can’t run coastwise, you most likely won’t see that on any of them.
I don’t know about the former OSG MSP tankers, but the usual suspects running around over there only cary one 3rd.
Is the full billet list floating around somewhere for the 10 tankers?
So the 3 OSG tankers in the TSP don’t have 2 third mates?
If so I’ll update the numbers.
@Meme.Lord No official list yet but MLL, Seabulk, Crowley, and OSG all got billets.
The Mykonos and the Santorini certainly don’t. I can say for certain but I’m pretty sure the Sun Coast doesn’t either.
The only reason the extra 3m is on the coastwise ships is because of the short runs. Those other ships don’t have that problem.
Do the CMs stand a cargo watch? Or do the 2m and 3m go on 6x6?
6 and 6
If they’re smart they do European/12x12, thats how MLL did it
I’ve done that 12x12 before between me and the CM tanking an ATB. It sucked. Depending on the load or discharge, it seemed to be the case where almost EVERYTHING would land on your watch. Hoses, DOI, starting up. Next guy would come in for the middle part, and then you’d come back again and have to finish ballast, topping off or stripping, hoses again, letting go. It sucked. The 6x6 is worse for sleep but I’ll take it over 12x12.
Who cares? The pay/work hours on the current tankers sucks. There’s a reason for the crewing shortages.
Thank you for the information. I just assumed tankers have two third mates because that’s all I ever heard.
For foreign going dry cargo vessels we always have just one third mate but sometimes two for the coastwise or night mates.
I will update my post
