What should be gCaptain's official USCG Hailing Port?

With gCaptain becoming a household name in the marine industry some manufacturers have started sending us gear to test. The problem is we didn’t have a way to test the gear without stuffing it in our seabags and hauling it out to ship. We’ve done this in the past but some of the gear is heavy (we just got a Simrad HD radar to test  and the TSA was never too happy (they don’t like things like green lasers ;). So, last year, we purchased a 43’ Sailboat to serve as a platform for product testing and a mobile HQ which we plan on taking to marine conventions and using Internationally for official company activities. Now we need to register the boat with the USCG and we need your help. It already has a name (The S/V gCaptain) but doesn’t yet have a hailing port and because we have offices across the country - and the boat will be hitting “the road” - we can’t decide what the homeport of gCaptain should be.

Help us pick an Hailing Port for the S/V gCaptain.

According to 46 CFR 67.119 the port must be:
(b) The hailing port must be a place in the United States included in the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Federal Information Processing Standards Publication 55DC.
© The hailing port must include the State, territory, or possession in which it is located.

The boat is currently anchored in the same town as our company is registered (Morro Bay, California) but we are planning to move it to the East Coast and sailing it internationally (anyone up for a Panama Canal trip?) so I don’t see how we can comply with ©. My interpretation is that we can pick any American city as long as we have justification (JDCavo?).

So here’s the plan, you guys suggest a Hailing Port and we’ll vote on the top suggestions. I’ll stencil the winning entry on the vessel’s hull and submit it to the NMC on form CG-1258… if they ak for justification I’ll print out this forum thread and mail it back to them ;).

So… what should be gCaptain’s official USCG Hailing Port?

And FYI here are a few example suggestions from a few gCaptain members I’ve asked so far:

Tinian or - Because gCaptain is an international site and this is the furthest US Territory.
Bronx, NY (The suggestion was King’s Point, NY - but I vetoed that!
Agaña, Guam (Because America’s day starts here)
Bight Maine (Sounds nautical)

Any place but Martinsburg, WV, please.

LOL… I like it! Just not sure if I have that much left in the paint budget

The options are limitless…anywhere with some rich maritime history. Boothbay, Camden, Maine. Boston, Charleston, Savannah.

I like Ocracoke Island, NC myself.

Do you have stats on where your most active members are located? I don’t consider myself as an active member of your forum. I would say where your headquarters is though as that is the most reasonable and justified. Second guess would be where you expect S/V g to spend most of it’s time on the East Coast.

John, with you at the helm? God help her!

You’re going to need to plead for a miracle so try Neversink, New York

If the ‘g’ in gCaptain is for Gulf, then I propose Ballast Key, FL. It’s southernmost point in the 48 contiguous states continuously above water and looks to be a decent eastern point in the GoM

The beautiful and majestic Port Fourchon LA!

Who actually owns the tax write off whoops i mean the sailboat?
If gcaptain corporation - a “C” corp I assume - then im pretty sure your accountant will confirm it must be the city and state where the corporation is registered. In your case I would assume somewhere in Delaware for the great tax rates.

Falling Waters, West Virginia— It is the actual Hailing Port… If we are talking about Port of Registry, we should go with the poster above’s idea!!

Its a California LLC... no need to move the company to Delaware since we dont make a profit (yet).

personally, I would register her in Koozebane, Oregon

an alternative would be Bogoslov Island, Alaska*

*an old shipmate and I had made plans once to land on Bogoslov Island someday and declare it a sovereign republic then ask for foreign aid from North Korea. We decided to scrap the plan because it would have meant we would have to actually live there and that nobody else would give a shit or do a single thing to make us leave!

New Orleans

Oh John…tell me you didn’t? I thought this is the boat you loved?

I mean a plastic sailboat…say it ain’t so? Don’t you want to make a statement? Between the new Island Nation of Bogoslov and your PT boat there is nothing to get in our way (except the Bering Sea weather, fuel prices, the USCG, but those are only details to iron out!)

I don’t know whether to be embarrassed or sad?

ps…if you need a place to pawn off any of that swag of yours then you know that “I promise I love you long time sailorman”

Wilmington Del like everything else

Well that’s easy then: San Francisco, the new global capital of social media (not to be confused with San Jose and Silicon Valley: the capital of the “old” Internet.)

No profit yet? Good! We try to keep our profits small or even nonexistent. Why give your hard earned money to the taxman???

I was going to vote for the Port of Indecision but I can’t find it on a real map although I heard its right next to Margaritaville.

I guess my second choice would be Assawoman, VA

The enchanted island of Puerto Rico.

Ponce, Puerto Rico!!

YES, a sailboat… but don’t worry once they let us start drilling for oil in california (and the price of diesel drops accordingly!) I’ll be sure we upgrade to something fast.

Don’t need to pawn off anything since most of the gear needs to be returned but we are looking for people to willing to write about gear we send them to test.
