What. Crew did they have

Same issue with boats and airplanes, unless it is just two of you out in or over the middle of the ocean, an uncoordinated AIS/ADS-B driven collision avoidance algorithm is likely to snowball into mass chaos. I am having a vision of every moving thing accidentally herding itself into the corner of the Inner Harbor and the tourists in the pedal boats getting chased by a car carrier

its this technology

There will be need of oil for a long time to come. I think it will take 500 years to phase it out. It’s not only about the fuel, but about the lubricants, the chemicals, the plastics, textiles, etc.
I see an increase in the use of oil than a decrease.

forget ais it was just a tool the USA forced on the world so they could identify vessels.
IMO still says it MIGHT be used for collision avoidance in the future…
If it was integrated with GMDSS so we could all click the screen and make a direct VHF call it would be something ( I have seen this in some VTS control rooms, would be nice to have on board)
Then it should show on screen the 2 vessels talking to each other??

At what quantity?
If Crude Oil refined into fuels are excluded, the quantity required for other uses are miniscule. (Anybody have a recent figure??)
With the reduced use of plastic envisaged in the future this may be reduced further.

Natural gas is used as feedstock for a lot of petrochemical production.at present. Other sources of feed stock are being investigated and developed.

You can do this right now if you buy the right stuff. My gear doesn’t do this, but if I upgraded my plotter it would.

are we talking pleasure boat stuff or IMO approved?

I am not sure about approvals. It is trivially easy to do, I don’t know why this isn’t widespread.

IMO approval is essentially a jobs program for mates.

you mean via NMEA 2000…not allowed on imo vessels…

yes but the gear is different, all the equipment cases are isolated from the power ground as IMO vessels run floating power so each box is a faraday cage.
You must of noticed the earth cables on the outside grounding them?

You would certainly remember if you had to chase a ground fault warning from a UPS…
