I bet the radio officer was delighted to find the radar antenna atop the Jumbo derricks.

Nice looking ferries.

Here is one that doesn’t have the looks, but ay least the age:

The story behind it:
New captain calming the rough waters of Kentucky's oldest ferry.

A veteran ship I have been following for many years now is the M/V Orient Explorer, ex Sognefjord, ex HMS Kilham, ex PCE 833.
Built in Chicago 1943; but given to the UK as part of the Lend Lease deal and returned to the US Navy in 1946 but struck from the US Navy Register in 1947.
She was sold to a Norwegian company in 1949 and converted to a Car/Pax ferry in 1950.
She was named M/V Sognefjord and served on the Bergen-Sognefjord route in Western Norway until 1982.
Sold 1982 to Filmeffekt A/S of Oslo,Norway and renamed Orion and used in a movie of the same name, both as accommodation for the film crew while shooting in Svalbard and with a “role” in the movie
Sold 1984 to K/S Orion Film A/S of Bergen and laid up
Sold 1987 to Matkat OY of Helsingfors, Finland for cruising in Finland
Sold 1991 to Orion Risteilyt O/Y of Hamina, Finland and renamed Orion II. Now also cruising to St.Petersburg, Russia
Sold 1996 to Jaako Mathias Eriksson of Honduras and cruising in from Cyprus.
Sold 1997 to a Dutch Co, renamed ORIENT EXPLORER and used as Live aboard Dive boat in S.E.Asia.
Since last docking (2009) laying at anchor and idle in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. East Malaysia.
She dragged anchor and beached due to a storm September 2019 - alongside the Magellan Hotel, Sutera Harbour Resort - Kota Kinabalu:

She was refloated in middle of last year and is now laying afloat alongside a pier in KK.
Seen here 17. Jan. 2022:

If anybody want more info and pictures from before the grounding, here is a link to a WordPress blog:

And to a Youtube video from after salvage:

There have been and is a campaigned on foot to get her home to Norway, but the possibilities of saving this one from scrapping is getting smaller by the day.

unknown destination. This classic rail ferry originated as CHARTRES from Dubigeon-Normandie SA in Nantes in 1974 and served SNCF for 19 years. She had a major casualty in 1990 when she struck the berth at Dieppe in bad weather and took water, requiring major repairs lateron. She was mainly serving English Channel crossings before she was acquired in 1993 by Greek Agapitos Line as EXPRESS SANTORINI. She was put on the Cycladic Islands route from Piraeus to Santorini but later also saw employment in the Azores. A new phase started in 2016 when the ferry was sold to Salem Al Makrani Cargo Co. of Abu Dhabi and renamed AL SALMY 4. Just five years later there were reports of her being acquired by Greek Seajets, and she finally became the AQUA MYTH in late 2021. Following an extended stay in Dubai this beautiful old lady left there Jan 6th heading for the brief call at Muscat.

I’m not sure what the real name or backstory of the old veteran tramp steamer in this movie is but at some point in their maritime career I think everyone should watch this cult-classic seagoing tale.

Enjoy!

I believe the ship used in the movie was the S/S Aslaug. Built in 1927 by B&W Copenhagen Denmark. She was 76.2m long and 11.7m wide. She had a triple expansion steam engine which gave her a speed up to 10 knots.

The 1930-built NAHLIN is purported to be the last surviving example of a large gentleman’s steam yacht built in the UK. It is seen arriving from the British Virgin Islands at Falmouth on February 7, where it was moored up by the team of SeaWide Services. The vessel, now owned by Sir James Dyson, the vacuum cleaner entrepreneur, was designed by GL Watson and built by John Brown in Glasgow , yard number 4099, for Lady Yule, who also ordered another two vessels at the same time. It was infamously associated with the abdication of King Edward Vlll of England as it was the setting for a romantic cruise for him and his lover Mrs Wallis Simpson.

The vessel was originally powered by four steam turbines driving two screws, but it was later converted to diesel motors. The tonnage was given by Lloyds Register as 555.79 gross/1391.71 net/. Loa: 296ft, wl 250ft. The gilded figurehead refers to the name Nahlin which is a native American word for ‘fleet of foot’.
