US Navy to Merchant Mariner

Hi guys, I’ve been sifting through the site for quite awhile now and still feel a bit lost. I am a US Navy vet with 9 years in and am currently in the USNR. Does any of my Naval training have relevance in the civilian maritime industry?

Check out the above link. It’s the latest version of the marine safety manual. Check out chapter 2. It’s all about military service. Although there’s an admitted discrepancy: at the beginning of the chapter they say they only accept transcripts of sea service, and then at the end of the chapter they admit the VA doesn’t provide these anymore. And I’ve observed this first hand dealing with the NM first hand with the NMC. Does anyone know if they’ve updated their policies?

You can get some seatime credit only for documented engineroom watchstanding. You asked about your “Naval Training” relevance, I recall there are some discussions on this forum about some schools in the Navy being creditable for things like fire fighting and other STCW stuff, sorry I can’t recall the details but you can search it out.
If all you did was ship out as a wiper, the fact that you have experience as a welder could make you a popular guy with your superiors.

Shipmate,
when you went to bootcamp could eliminate the need for STCW. AS I recall, any NAVY Basic Training after 1995 will credit you for STCW.
Where are you? MidAtlantic Maritime Academy http://www.mamatrains.com/ in Norfolk/Va Beach has on site consultants that could answer ALL yer questions in one sitting and probably you get signed up for the remaining required courses. Up in Boston, former REC Evaluator Marc Grossetti http://www.cglicense.com/ could also answer those questions and get you pointed in the right direction for a price, as he did with me.

You may want to take a gander at this thread as well http://gcaptain.com/forum/professional-mariner-forum/5568-navy-merchant-mariner.html

Good luck

Chief, thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately, I went to boot camp in '92. Though I did attend NAVDAMCONTRACEN shortly thereafter. Basically, HT A school plus advanced firefighting training and wet trainer (save the “Buttercup”). That was about 5 months of training. I also have a 4955 NEC, the so called “super-welder” NEC. You mentioned Norfolk, I happen to be headed up there at the end of the month (from Mayport) to perform a pre-INSURV assessment on an FFG. BTW, my last duty station was ACU-4, in Little Creek.

Also bear in mind that yer ID card will get you in the door at MSC Training Facility East in Freehold, NJ (It did me anyway) at NO cost, ya just gotta pay for food and lodging.
NONE of yer Firefighting counts.

Thanks Chief,
I just got off the phone with MidAtlantic, looks like I’ll have to stay in Norfolk a bit longer to sit in on one of their “Intro sessions”.
