Us jones act fuel/scrubber question

Dump question, but what type of fuel do US Jones act tankers and barges use? I assume ULSD but not sure… are they waived from ECA requirements?

There is a reason Matson built some new ships for 2020 deployment…

Jones Act ships working in the North American ECA use ULSD, less than 0.1%. Typically it comes dyed red much like heavy equipment fuel. Once in awhile we get undyed fuel, but that is rare. It is so nice not having to deal with the maintenance associated with heavy fuel.

Matson’s (ex-Horizon) D-7’s Alaskan Service ships had scrubbers installed in 2016 & 2017. They have embarked last year on installing scrubbers on 6 additional ships. Three were done in 2019 and the last three are scheduled for this year.

Their new ships from Philly Ship and NASSCO will allow them to retire their steamships.

Thanks for the answers, very useful. Do you know if any of the US tankers have scrubbers or that is just the containers? Trying to figure out domestic HFO and VLSFO demand…

I have no knowledge of any tankers having scrubbers installed but that doesn’t mean they can’t or won’t in the future. It is up to the companies to make those decisions.
