The overall discussion must include everyone. But on a smaller scale I’d think grouping everyone together would not lend itself to open talk. I only know female victims (not related to MMA) and I know they are not likely to open up in a room full of men. I can only assume the same would be true of the opposite sex.
I never said that. Of course anyone can be a victim. And of course it would help if more instances were reported. I agree that the more problems have been created by Universities trying to “handle” the reporting and sweeping things under the rug.
I absolutely disagree that victims have an “ethical obligation to aggressively pursue legal action”. Victims have no obligation, they are victims. They need to be supported, need to recover, need to not be blamed. Law Enforcement and the judicial system have ethical obligations to aggressively pursue legal action. Society has an ethical obligation to stop creating victims, stop allowing assault to be a frequent expected occurrence, and stop allowing aggressors off the hook with a slap on the wrist. And Universities have an ethical obligation to stop worrying more about their reputation than their vulnerable students.
If you are victimized an investigation will not be successful without your help. No one will ever fight harder for you than you will. These victims should not allow the perpetrators to go unpunished because they did not report the incidents.
Or…say didn’t go the hospital to get a rape kit done and have any injuries documented as soon as possible. Which is why they should call the police and not the resident assistant or college administrator.
Had about 6-8 cadets from MMA over a few years. I am not an alumni. 2 went thru a hurricane with me and did just fine. Had a couple of MMA engineers that were employed on my vessel. They did a great.job. I can’t speak regarding current situations at the Academy, Those guys kicked ass. My last two chiefs ,one was from Maine, the other was a Texas hawsepiper partially trained by the MMA guy and got his license through hard work… Good shit people. Not in any way downplaying whatever is going on up that way, but those engineers did our crew a damn good job.
I don’t know, I literally posted the link that the first post was referring to, so that anyone who chose to could have a full understanding of what was being talked about. I’m guessing you weren’t one of the 41 who clicked on the link.
You just seem to want to talk about how you used to work with some guy that was from there and you had no problem with him. I mean, I worked with a guy who was from there and he was a real piece of shit. But is any of that relevant to the current situation? No. Your previous experience has no bearing on the current issues.
Sorry @SeaEagle but New3M is right about this. I was a Boy Scout, attend Catholic mass & had nothing but positive experiences with both but it would be disingenuous & tone deaf to harp on that on a discussion about sexual abuse by members of the clergy or BSA.
Sorry for you your guy from MMA was a piece of shit. Most of mine were decent fellows. Not just one guy as you suggest. Perhaps look in the mirror how they are percieved by you? You have hard on for MMA , that’s your problem not mine.Worked with many more people than you sir, I can spot the good ones rather quickly , the bad ones showed their ass much sooner and are easier to spot. As I said before, I was afforded a hand picked crew. My time on the water does matter how you work with people… Your responses do show limited experience in that category… Whatever is going on at MMA and other institutions needs to be dealt with. I would’nt want my son or daughter to not feel safe getting an education/career. Nor while sailing, if they chose to do so.
Holy crap man, know when to just stop. You don’t have to reply with an off-topic retort every time someone points out you made an off topic comment. Work experience and quality of graduates you’ve worked with has been discussed ad nauseam on other posts, has absolutely ZERO to do with the topic being discussed on this post which is sexual harassment and assault of students.
It is as if you are intentionally trying to drive it off topic and get it locked by trying to discuss things completely unrelated to the topic. Feel free to start a new thread to talk about the fine people you’ve sailed with. But don’t feel obligated to spout off here unless you can add to the subject matter, which again is specifically sexual assault and sexual harassment on campus.
Your son went to Kings Point, did he not? Do you not mention this almost daily? And how is their record on SASH? All of the cadets there feel nice and safe, do they?
Yes, I do remember that. I also remember the fine members of MMA that are getting grouped into a SASH moment as if they all are complicit. My son was safe at KP. And on the ships he sailed on. Does this shit happen? Yes it does, at almost every university in the country. Even one case is too many. He isn’t mentioned daily, but glad YOU mentioned it. Perhaps MMA admin is reacting in a not appropriate way ,KP actually went after it aggressively a few years back. Shutting down sea year until the the companies had a plan to protect the cadets was aggressive. The on campus plan is still evolving., It requires reporting and follow-up. It is still a problem at the major federally funded institutions, let alone the rest of the country.
Do you ever address a question statement directed at you that shows you were wrong? Every time you just seem to avoid the part of the previous post calling you out or proving you wrong and just babble of something vaguely related and ask a counter question like that is somehow going to get everyone’s attention off you.
If you don’t have an anecdote, question, or statement that furthers the conversation in relation to the topic of the thread, just read and move on.
Maybe not daily, but frequently enough that I just changed my avatar off the pink S to keep from getting confused about when I had a son and how he grew up so fast.
