Tug Specialist, Casualty at Tappan Zee Bridge Site

Getting word that tug Specialest was caught under the rake of a barge early this morning and rolled. 1 confirmed dead, 2 missing.

Hearing different reports of how casualty actually occurred. Hearing Tug hit bridge abutment, rough dangerous currents affecting search.

If you saw the pictures posted on FB yesterday you will see that they had no business towing the crane rig they were towing.

I have a former shipmate who was working on there the last time we talked. I hope he is ok. This sucks.

I just heard back, my old shipmate wasn’t aboard but his friend was.

Bayrunner,
Where did you see those pics?

That’s my boat that went down. I was expecting to be back aboard her in a couple weeks. All I have heard is that she struck a construction barge.
Any further details you guys have are appreciated.

I dont know who was the Skipper at the time but I think I know. If its who I think, he leaves behind a wife and 3 young kids.

Losing two shipmates feels like a hard punch to the gut. I didnt know the third sailor, but its still sad as hell.

they were in the Facebook group “tugboating”

I’m still hoping for good news but it doesn’t seem likely now.

Looks like she got squeezed and scraped. Sincere condolences to all involved.

Doesn’t a semi regular poster to this forum work on that tug?

maybe the owner or port captain/engineer? Won’t single him out as I can’t imagine what he’s dealing with, unless God forbid he was there himself.

I believe he is the owner, scary stuff sad day for sure.

I’m really saddened to hear about this. I saw it brought up on Facebook. My condolences to all and their families.

hope he wasn’t aboard , did anyone shoot him a message checking on him ?

RIP Paul Amon… I worked with him at Mac Philly.

I just read on FB tugboat page a crew member was pulled from the sunken tug today deceased, one more is in the boat I think but not sure. Truly a sad deal.

Very saddened to hear about Paul and the crew of Specialist.
A few shots of Specialist working with us on a New York dredge job back in 2010.

A similar accident happened up in Portsmouth, Nh a few years back. I am an engineer but it seems working around these bridges they need to have a “drift off” plan in case of power failure like a DP situation. May those poor guys rest in peace.

RIP to my Dad, Paul Amon. He is missed so much. I was his “shadow,” they called me growing up. He was such a great guy, and so full of life! May the families and friends of those affected in this tragedy also try to find peace.

I’m so sorry for your loss. He was a great guy and I personally know how proud he was of you.

was your dad tugboatchief? Rip

No, my dad was not tugboatchief
