Yeah, how many ships have recently been cancelled due to construction before design? I’m sure this design phase will be much more streamlined, particularly from an engineering standpoint…

Imagine if Obama had named a class of battleships after himself!
I hope some admiral some where has the balls to explain to current POTUS why battleships are an antiquated concept in modern warfare strategy. Otherwise this is going to make the Littoral Combat Ships seem like a bargain.

It is never going to happen, it just the rambling of a dementia addled man. I too thought this announcement was something from the Onion or the Duffle Blog.The Navy does not want and does not have nuclear weapons on ships, they prefer submarines for some reason. He mentions he wants aesthetics a few times so some gold accents will be needed.

I doubt this will ever happen. What’d he say, 20-25 ships in the class possibly?
We pumped out a ship every few days in WW2. Despite being prefabricated and designed for short use the were better thought out designs and layouts than any POS our shipyards build today.
Yeah, great. A fleet of LCS-quality trash. Didn’t he also mention a new fleet of carriers? The Ford Class isn’t good enough?

I spent an entire career going to sea in warships that - thank God - didn’t end up getting shot at. I dreaded the thought of going up against Soviet warships stacked with missiles and every sort of whizz-bang gadgetry that we didn’t have. I remember us trying out one last ditch defence against sea-skimming missiles by firing our 4’5" guns into the sea at very close range to (theoretically) throw up a wall of water which would detonate the incoming missile so we only got hit by shrapnel. We tried it and after the first shot detonated very close I glanced around the bridge from my instinctively induced prone position and noted all hands were likewise terrified - of our own guns. That’s the sort of desperate measure we came up with.
It seems Trump has revitalised the battleship classification (and it will need to be big to fit all the good stuff in) with its connotation of killing everything and surviving, and got a clean sheet and told the designers to put the best of everything into the design. That’s a start I can get behind. There’s a certain pleasing aesthetic in a ship armed to the teeth. There’s no ideal warship design, but stop it with the disposable frigates and warships with cheaper popguns and space and weight allowances for later bolt on missile canisters, and transgender bathrooms, and emissions-sensitive use of recycled cooking oil or corn husks or some such.
The possibility of gilt furnishings and trim (possibly even a real golden rivet) is enticing too.
Shall we wait and see?

Remember when the cult said he hated war, and wanted to get us out of the Middle East?
Well, we lost brave two soldiers in Syria a few days ago, and we’re still bombing terrorists. We’re still at war in the Middle East. I’d say it’s escalating.
But no furor from the cult over the deaths of the two soldiers in Syria, unlike the furor over the 12 deaths in Afghanistan. No furor over escalating war in Syria.
From which I deduce that the cult is now cool with continuing wars in the Middle East. Which just a year ago they were vehemently against. And I’m not against bombing in Syria. I’m just truly confused what the cult is for and against.
They say they want peace but they applaud the Department of War.
They are furious when Americans are killed in Afghanistan but silent when they die in Syria.
With all that cognitive dissonance going on, the distraction of new gilded battleships just in time for Xmas makes sense.

Trump already got what he wanted out of this - the headline, the appearance of action. A good 20 or 30 new headlines will happen in the next week and 99 pct of MAGA will have forgotten about this in the constant flooding of the zone.
