The end is nigh... (Another Autonomous Ship Thread)

I know an older thread has come back to life regarding the legality of autonomous ship ops, but this latest GCapt’n article is truly disturbing. Undocking, birthing, and underway all from the comfort of some noodle shop. Guess we better “learn to code.”

But who would they arrest when it runs aground, catches fire, or gets hit by a meteorite?

“But who would they arrest…”? That’s easy - the lowest-ranking schlub in the noodle-shop control room at the time.

As an inhabitant of a smallish vessel, I wonder more what will happen if I blunder across their course?

I imagine someone would have to be “on watch” on the bridge… I’m sure they’d have a skeleton crew for tying up etc. Eventually they may be run like the military UAV program. (Steering from a trailer in Nevada)

Hahaha I was actually thinking the exact same thing

If it’s so smart, why does it need bridge windows?

The photo shows a lovely day for Autonomous berthing trials. Wellington, NZ would get one day in six like that at this time of the year. Crossing Cook Strait would be a bit of a lottery.
