used to be the wild, WILD West…I guess it is now filled with celebs, posers and wannabes. The real hard core fishermen must be sickened by this fucking comedy! I have grown to hate the modern Dutch Harbor as much as I hate Port Fourchon although you can at least get shit faced in Dutch!
I worked with a young man from Wasilla who went crabbing and made a ton of dough but his comment on the show was this," We were too safe to be on the show, we still made plenty of money doing it right . "
At the moment second hand boats from Alaska is used by both the Russians and Norwegians, but that is changing.
More seaworthy vessels are being converted for this expected bonanza and the interest is very good from people that would like to work on the boats. If you have experience from crab boats, here is your chance, provided you speak Norwegian: http://sysla.no/2016/11/15/havbruk/over-700-vil-fiske-snokrabbe_174730/
Your fisheries are changing, due in large part to climate change, which I am no longer at liberty to discuss, because Fuck Trump.
Whitefish are moving into your neck of the woods. Your fishermen are already on to that bit of info, though.
Yes the northern waters are warming. New species are found in the North Sea and Norwegian Sea and many species of fish and other sea life are moving further and further north, incl. Bluefin Tuna.
Fisheries are moving with the changes. New vessels, new methods of catching and processing are developed to take advantage of the new opportunities.
BTW; Whitefish, as in Cod, Haddock and a whole range of other species are the mainstay of fisheries in the North Atlantic and Barents Sea and has been so for centuries. King Crab and Snow Crab are introduced species that is now becoming major source of income in the north of Norway and on the Kola Peninsula.
