A few years back I sailed with a senior officer who insisted on explaining his political beliefs at any opportunity. If anyone disagreed he would get angry, his face would turn red and if the other person continued to engage he eventually become so angry he would leave the area, stopping and turning at the door to get the last word in.
At the time I didn’t think much of it one way or the other because that person was technically skilled. However I now believe people it can create problems on board for example subordinates feeling uncomfortable…
Better to keep one’s opinion to one’s self if the cost is reducing crew effectiveness.

Well, I think that you are wrong, and I am getting very upset about it. . . .
I agree. I am very opinionated and very right. Those who disagree only show their ignorance and lack of knowledge in the political arena. Disagree? That just shows me that you are wrong.
Cognitive science has demonstrated that when people are shown verifiable facts that contradicts previously held beliefs they become more strongly attached to their original ideas. Using logic for emotional issues doesn’t work.
Yeah it’s a bad idea, I listen to a news channel that leans to one side a bit but now days it seems they all do, anyhow when folks come up to the wheelhouse they are free to leave if they don’t like the noise up there. I don’t like to talk politics at the galley table and usually bring up Jesus when they bring up the president or congress when we do end up talking politics I hate it when they only talk talking points with no thought of their own. Any how what’s the deal with religion???
Politics are no longer a subject WORTH discussing. Unfortunate due to the stupidity of the masses electing and re-electing both sets of morons.
Religion and “significant others” are the only subjects off limits for me.
The word “politics” is derived from the words “poly” meaning many, and “tics”… A blood sucking parasite. That applies to both sides of the aisle.
This is one time our elected leaders should pay attention to the advice of Vladimir Putin … how scary is that ?
On February 4th, 2013, Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, addressed the Duma, (Russian Parliament), and gave a speech about the tensions with minorities in Russia:
"In Russia live Russians. Any minority, from anywhere, if it wants to live in Russia, to work and eat in Russia, should speak Russian, and should respect the Russian laws. If they prefer Sharia Law, then we advise them to go to those places where that’s the state law. Russia does not need minorities. Minorities need Russia, and we will not grant them special privileges, or try to change our laws to fit their desires, no matter how loud they yell ‘discrimination’. We better learn from the suicides of America, England, Holland and France, if we are to survive as a nation. The Russian customs and traditions are not compatible with the lack of culture or the primitive ways of most minorities. When this honorable legislative body thinks of creating new laws, it should have in mind the national interest first, observing that the minorities are not Russians. The politicians in the Duma gave Putin a five minute standing ovation.
Most of the people I come into contact with out here do not even vote. If you do not vote then I do not want to here your opinion. You have not earned the right.
I think the bottom line is; if you are in a position where you have to deal with people, senior ship officer for example, you should be skilled enough to recognize when you’re making people feel uncomfortable If you lack that ability, or if you are just a bully and don’t care, then that raises a question as to whether or not you belong in that position. If people enjoy the conversation then fine, if people are getting angry and raising voices probably better to change the subject.
If you are in charge you shouldn’t even start a conversation along political lines to see if anyone gets angry or uncomfortable. There is no place for politics on a vessel period. And btw, I agree if you don’t vote you have no views worthy of discussion anyway.
A long time ago I was taught there are three things you never talk about aboard ship. They are
Politics
Women
Religion.
Seriously, never talk about Women aboard ship? Ha, let me know how that works out for you! On a tug full of young-ish guys I find it rare that we talk about anything but women.

1&3 I agree with though.
The reason you don’t talk about women aboard ship had to do with sailing deep sea on a regular run and the statistical possibility of guys banging the same girl. So next time you want to make a comment understand where it comes from because sitting in the mess hall listen to guys talking about banging girls and then realize they are banging the same girl is interesting. That or I’ve seen too many times some guy banging another guys wife or girlfriend.
