Stowaways travel 3000 km on ship’s rudder

Three stowaways spent at least 11 days at the helm of a large tanker. They were found in the Canary Islands and had traveled more than 3000 kilometers. The stowaways were just above the water surface, reports the Spanish Maritime Rescue Brigade.

The men had symptoms of hypothermia and dehydration. They were taken to hospital upon arrival at the port of Las Palmas. The trip to Spain took 11 days. The ship departed from the Nigerian capital Lagos.

The Spanish rescue services shared photos of the special event. It is not the first time that stowaways try to reach Spain in this way. In 2020, a 14-year-old Nigerian made a similar journey on the helm of a ship.
