STOP spreading industry lies - There is no shortage of deck officers

“As the maritime industry grapples with a nationwide shortage of licensed deck officers, the need for innovative workforce development solutions has never been greater. “

I call BULLSH*T.
I know this is an ad not an actual article.
BUT I am sick of people saying this I don’t see any shortage- there hasn’t been a shortage a year if not longer now. Besides a couple openings on the LSMRS that are going away there are literally no deck job openings on any of the boards of any Union. The shortage has been over for years. There’s no jobs period. People got to stop spreading this lie that there is a shortage of people. it’s not 2022 anymore. And repeating the lie is counter productive. There’s been little of any progress in increasing the number of ships in the US fleet. It’s sad. Trump better step it up.

No shortage of deck officers (and there never was), just like there never was a shortage of airline pilots (hiring has frozen up for them, too).

Good news is that there are a lot of construction jobs open from electrical to AC now that the illegals are being moved out. No reason to be unemployed.

There is no shortage of credentialed mariners, but there is no longer a lot of spare capacity (guys lined up at the door begging for jobs).

When companies say there is a shortage of mariners what they really mean is:

They are not enough mariners willing to work for the low wages we want to pay.

There is a significant drop in quality. There is a shortage of highly skilled and experienced mariners, but no shortage of MMC holders.

No CM jobs at AMO, MEBA, only MMP LSMR - which are going bye

Never was….. bullshit. Do you not recall the MARAD Turbo Activation of 4-5 yrs ago. Disastrous not only in terms of mission readiness, but also in terms of the desperation the unions went thru to fill jobs that THEY told the companies they could staff, who obviously told MARAD/MSC they could be ready when called upon.

Not all the LMSRs going bye bye, 6 or 7 attached to USA/USAF.

USMC affiliated staying MSC-FOS

There is a shortage of pilots when they don’t have 100 pilots fighting over every job.

It wasn’t because they couldn’t find mates. It was because dispatching is a fuckin dumpster fire who don’t seem to understand how a phone works.

Those with a Chief mate license that aren’t permanent are difficult to find right now but I wouldn’t call it a full on shortage. Maybe MSC still needs more officers but haven’t kept up with them.

I strongly disagree. Also almost all Chief mates are permanent.

Might want to ask MSC about that and why they had to mothball 17 ships…

I saw MLL, Patriot, SLNC, and APL CM jobs on the “open” board recently. Also saw a few MLL 2M jobs “open” recently.

Some of the ships and or runs might be less than desirable, but it still seems like it could be a lot worse. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Within MMP, I would say ETERRIBLE3 is correct. Not enough people who WANT to sail relief CM OTB when opportunity is there, or simply don’t want to sail CM ever. Doesn’t matter which company, doesn’t matter what the run is. If you want CM work, especially hired gun OTB, the work is there.

That APL run is brutal for chief mates. Really stupid to take out the extra 3/M.

Just because there are board jobs that are open for a day doesn’t mean there is a shortage. If there is a shortage it means there are jobs open for weeks and months that can’t be filled.

I could think of a bunch of routes that are more brutal for Chief mates. Most MMP third mates didn’t like that there was 2 APL third mates anyway because both of their OT would be cut and they would be stuck on the ships not making as much as they would elsewhere. APL is all containership not Tankers where 2 third mates could easily always max out OT.

Yeah, this was kinda bullshit. The JHSV’s were a badddd investment and they can’t find a mission for them so they’re hanging some up. The other ships on that list have been on the chopping block for years due to age.

Does MSC have a manpower issue? Maybe, but it’s not because there aren’t enough AB’s or CM’s out there. It’s because that’s a terrible outfit to work for.
