At one time in my mariner career, I would start work on a vessel and then the USCG inspect was due. Then following hitch a different vessel and then USCG inspect. After a few times I started to wonder what am I the USCG inspect mariner? Or what about this, you get to a vessel and it is a neglected piece of junk. You turn it around, get things painted and looking good , running good. Then you get sent to a different vessel where the process starts all over again. After a few vessels you start to develope a we’ll I am not painting this one or getting it through USCG inspect. Would that be a sense of entitlement ?
I don’t know if I’d call that a sense of entitlement so much as borderline unprofessional behavior. Obviously your employer saw something in you and highly prized your abilities to get vessels shipshape and through COI. Whether they should have been hammering their vessel crews who weren’t keeping up is another matter. But you don’t actually say whether you were the officer in charge of COI and maintenance, or whether you were just an unlicensed guy shuttled around from vessel to vessel because you worked hard–I’m assuming you were the officer. Anyway, if you were the unlicensed guy and nobody else was working to your standard (and weren’t required to), then that attitude could be forgiven to some extent. As the officer, however, it’s your job to make sure the vessel is ready for COI and is properly maintained. So if you were to go in with the “ah, screw it” attitude then that won’t do you any bit of good.

Personally, if I’d noticed such a trend, I would have asked the company what the deal was and since I seemed to be the “whip things back into shape” specialist, hows about a little consideration for that, maybe a bonus or a raise or something.
That is one hell of a tuba. It must take a set of lungs to toot that horn.
you need to hear me belt out “A Life on the Ocean Wave” or “The Impossible Dream” or “You’re a Mean One Mister Grinch”…shear poetry of the baritone!

if I only had been able to vocalize on the ubertuba with the same awesomeness…I’d be superintendent of KP today!

Glenn Beck is a retard. I say this as a conservatarian.

A sense of entitlement to me is a person with a taxi driver’s license who thinks they deserve the same pay some someone with a license to drive a 18 wheeler. Oh yes and they should be driving the 18 wheeler too with their taxi driver’s license… Because hey a license is a license right? Doing the same thing right? Driving.

Or through one’s nose.
I hear that a symptom of this feeling of entitlement is a large ring on one’s finger.

And that should get this thread going good!

As a hawsepiper i can say that whenever i work with a younger academy guy i try to make it clear i have nothing against the academy route. It bothers me when hawsepipers have the chip on there shoulder towards the academies. It doesn’t make any sense. If someone is a piece of shit academy or not then treat them accordingly but i hate being associated with hawsepipers who purposely treat academy people like shit for no reason. Its petty and a wreaks of insecurity.
You’re right.

It doesn’t make any sense as to why you feel the need to talk to them about it at all.

wait, aren’t you the entitled peach who started that lovely thread on “incompetent engineers”?

Hey go fuck yourself.

Who said i brought it up? Usually the guys like to bring it up right away when they come on the boat and then i can seethe worried look when i say i didn’t go to school. They assume i resent there path so i try to make it clear that it makes no difference to me. Based on your asshole response i would have to guess that you went to an academy and got a lot of shit when you came to work. Try not to harbor that resentment. Let it free and you will feel a tremendous weight lifted from your soul. Namaste my brother…

Hey, yogi, why so hostile?

Sorry. I woke up on the wrong side of the rack and your comment irritated me. I just needed my green juice.
