Saildrones <-> Colregs

Decided to start one anyway…

This may need its own thread topic…
… but Saildrones?

Lotsa warships - and 7 saildrones - off Cuban coast

Interesting Colregs conundrum to add to the ongoing unmanned vessel conversations…
… all those saildrones around so much traffic and near a TSS…
… at least if one of them is rammed & sunk, we can have a test case!

… e.g…

I dont have my copy of Farwells with me, but I beleive the 9th edition cites a COLREGS revision is in the works.

Clealry Unamnned vessels do not fit into the current scheme at first glance, but I disagree that they can’t meet Rule 5 requirements. Proper lookout is a concept, not a person, and most unmanned vessels Ive seen are not 100% autonomous, so id argue with the right instrumentation and a proper connection, an operator can make a full appraisal of the situation and of the risk of Collision.
