Sail cargo Project - Costa Rica

That’s wrong, I’m sorry to say, ombugge. You are constantly posting in support of such things as wind-powered ships, reducing emissions, alternative energies, so-called renewables. You assume (wrongly) that I have a

I have never said anything of the sort. I say people who believe their own lying PR brochures are idiots and I’m quite happy to call people idiots who believe wind and solar and batteries can power the whole world right now and that coal, nuclear, hydro, gas and oil have to be eliminated or the world will fry. How’s the temperature in Norway today?

It is absolutely useless debating about climate change here. It also useless proposing “solutions” to climate change and CO2 when the only debate ought to be on whether they are in fact a problem. I say no.

Give me articles with lifecycle costings of any of those issues compared to existing technologies and I’ll pay attention.

As far as I can gather I’m the only working master in square rigged sail on this site so I figure my experience might carry some weight here on whether a fully rigged ship with no engine can make a living carrying cargo, or a pretty cartoon picture/video of a ship with some sails can actually sail as its ‘main propulsion’ on scheduled trans-Atlantic runs. I’m entitled to my opinion and I’m not assuming everyone else is an idiot. Debate me. Don’t insult me.

The system is telling me I’m talking to you too much and I should let others have a go. I tend to agree.

We know what is powering the world TODAY. The discussion is about what will power the world (incl. shipping) in 2050 and beyond.

You asked: “How’s the temperature in Norway today”?
You are aware that Norway is a long country? It stretches from 71N to 58N
As in Australia there is a difference in temperature and weather between North and South and between West and East.

It is never the same in Darwin as in Alice Springs, or in Hobart. (But then you knew that, right ??)

Here on the NW coast we have had an unusually long cold spell, with clear and calm weather and temperature down to -8 at night. (Unusual for here)
But that is coming to an end with an Atlantic low bringing warmer weather, at least in southern Norway… .

Here is the forecast for Ålesund (62.5N 6W) for next week:

The forecast for North Cape(71N 25.75E) for the same period:

In Folldal, (South East Norway, near the Swedish border. 62N !0E, 700 m. ASL) they registered -38.5C on 02. Febr. 2021, which is not a record for that location:

Here is forecast for Folldal next week:

I am not going to bother…a couple of years ago Herr Bugge became the Grand Poobah of the forum and I had no desire to challenge his exalted position. Of course, another tactic to use is to just ignore him and leave him alone in the wilderness yaking with himself

How can you not want daily reminders about how great China is compared to the US and daily weather forecasts for Norway?

I got the same computer generated message and also tend to agree.
I can live comfortably without having some grumpy old fellows telling me that we should stick to doing things the way it has always been done.
Anybody trying something different are totally unqualified idiots that don’t know what they are talking about.

There are many enough here that stick up for US on anything.
Somebody have to try to put some facts into the equation.

PS> I answered a direct question about the temperature in Norway today:

I gave a direct answer, with links to show just that + forecast for the next week for a few places in Norway. If that is not wanted, don’t read. (Or open the links)

I just want to go on the record to say I verbally support these people 100%. I’m a verbal advocate for sail cargo ships. It’s not my money or time & I’ve seen people, businesses & governments blow a hell of a lot more money on shit that was crazier than this. Good luck to them! I sincerely hope it turns out great!

To you naysayers, WTF??? It’s not costing you anything, leave it alone. You guys should be harping about roads to nowhere, studies that no one cares about, wars without end & naval ships that don’t work or serve no purpose, stuff you are actually paying for. I don’t care if someone makes a sail cargo ship out papermache as long as it doesn’t involve me.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. The whole ‘we must save the world from the evils of CO2’ is costing us $billions collectively. And it’s not someone else paying. Ultimately all costs are paid by the people. I’m paying and so are you … for what exactly?

I’ve said it on this site before. This bulltish is hurting the poor the most.

Ask a peasant subsistence farmer or fisherman whether he might prefer a proper gas cooker for his wife or even a light bulb at night in his hut, a tractor or a good diesel motor for his boat to ease his crushing physical labour and increase his productivity or to be able to send his kids to school and get a better life than him or whether he’d prefer the solemn, sincere, hand-on-heart promise of doom pixie Greta for the world’s temperature to be a poofteenth of a degree cooler in a century and you can guess his answer.

Yet here we have the comfortable elites eg the IMF telling poor nations they can’t have what we have. ‘Here, have a nice battery and a solar panel’ they say, you can’t have that evil coal fired power station to electrify your many villages because it will destroy the world. Think of all those elites, the Davos crowd, jetting into a Swiss resort in their private jets and discussing how they will rule the world. They don’t even want governments. They know best. They are the experts and experts have to rule.

Here’s my answer.

Less government and more capitalism. Less collective preening and more individual self reliance.

That’s it.

Where are environments best protected? In rich nations. Why is that? Because we can afford it and we desire it. We use less land more efficiently for farming. We live longer and more healthily. We donate money to good causes. We don’t tend to have large families to produce a bunch of future labour to support us in old age. We don’t send the kids to slave in a mine or the fields -they go to school. And we do it because we want to.

Let poor people do what we did, become prosperous through harnessing cheap, reliable continuous energy and by trading (not protecting ourselves from their produce) in all means of transport.

But no, we sit fat and happy and wag our finger at the poor of the world and tell them they have to extract energy from moonbeams and Pixie farts to save us from the tragedy of a slightly reduced ski season. We protect our markets from them otherwise our government-protected elites won’t be able to continue to rake in their loot.

And we do utterly idiotic things like sailing cargo ships because we have been led sheep-like to dread a harmless but essential for all life on earth molecule.

Mariners should not have any objection to an organization that wants to start a new short sea (nearby foreign) cargo service and provide training to mariners.

There is no reason to hate our nearby friendly foreign neighbors, who don’t flood our country with poor illegal immigrants, and host 3 or 4 million American tourists per year.

There is no reason to hate wooden boats, sail, or people who want to do it, just because they propose to carry a little cargo.

Let’s focus our efforts on getting American Mariners vaccinated, and on raising American mariner wages and benefits.

It’s a freaking sail boat!!!

Ahhh! But it’s not. It’s a virtue signal bowing to God Greta. It’s saying, ‘Look at us. We are pure and holy’.

I reserve the right to mock it.

About 20 years ago, before Ms Thunberg was born I had a brother who would cut his yard with an old style manual push mower like the one pictured below. He had a whole slew of reasons why he used it, environmental reasons included. I could have mocked him if I wanted but didn’t. It would’ve been a waste of my time & I’m not that petty. But also, that old timey push mower was cool just like old timey sail cargo ships. I reserve the right to say old timey sail cago ships are bad ass.

I recall a sailing vessel Pictern something or other that sailed in the Pacific maybe. They had paying “crew” and it appeared that the working passengers paid the lion’s share of the costs.

I thought it fell out of favor but apparently dude ranches are still a thing. People pay money to attempt to live the cowboy experience. Some people pay top dollar for guides & fees to climb the world’s tallest mountains. If a person has enough cash they can go to space & even to the International Space Station. I once took my family on a sleeper car on Amtrak just for the experience. Paying to crew on a sail ship or sail cargo ship isn’t that unexpected if you look at all the other ways people spend money to entertain themselves. Crewing on a sail ship is probably cheaper than a cocaine, crack, heroin & hydrocodone habit & those habits are very popular.

Dude ranches, a cool “Tequila Train” in Mexico, baseball camp, hang-gliding, NASCAR driving, high performance sports cars on a track …inexpensive submarines by Nautilus. My personal favorite: flying stunt planes and dogfighting.

I’m a firm believer in spending money on experiences.

I used to live in Mexico. We used go back 2-6 times a year but infrequently now. I’ve been to a few bullfights in D.F (Mexico City) & considered going to Pamplona, Spain in my younger days. If people pay to be chased by freaking bulls then there’s nothing wrong with paying to take a sail ship from point A to B.

In my ship we do many things the ‘old timey’ way because we like the traditional style. We worm, parcel and serve our steel wire rigging, tar it down regularly, hand seize the eyes on the ends (no swaging here), make and use baggywrinkle, we spew over the side in the proper traditional way and pull on lotsa ropes with lotsa folks.

But we don’t, and we never will, make a profit. An we don’t claim us sailing everywhere saves the world. It sets our trainees on a path of self confidence and personal achievement. And I feel virtuous doing it. That’s ‘bad ass’.
