Question about yatch crew hiring paperwork

So I know we don’t usually do yacht stuff here, but I have a question…

If I were ti be hired aboard a small yatch, as the captain and only hired crew, what type of paperwork should be involved? Do I “charter myself” out or something? Should I be on as a contractor? Would it be best to have the owner get a W-4? I could easily take cash, but want to make sure my dots are connected here.

Thanks for your input!

I believe they were called fields overseers in the early 1800s.

Is this an American boat operating in the US? Is it operated as a private recreational vessel or does the owner operate it for hire?

If it is just a toy boat operated for the owner’s enjoyment only then it is no different that if the guy hired you to mow his lawn. Either you are an employee or you are a contractor. If you don’t know the difference, look it up.

If it is a charter boat or carries “guests” for hire then you and your owner need to do a lot more homework.
