REM:
May be Splash247 has some insider knowledge she has a Ruski owner parading as UAE resident and the fact she looaded in Russia does not mean it was russian cargo despite Russia being the largest producer of Ammonium Nitrate . It could be transhipment for some may be more sinister purposes .

Exactly right. The cargo was loaded FOB in a Russian port. The cargo owner is either the consignee, or maybe a 3rd party trading company.

Very little of the millions of tonnes of AN shipped every year is used for anything but fertilizer.
Any inside information to shear, or just spreading conspiracy theories?

Dr.Bugge . do not be so negative.
U surely investigated things o/b or somewhere else. Hence i presume U were interested in looking under every stone in seeking the truth. Leaving some stones uncovered renders your investigatiive efforts useless or at least incomplete.

“Very little” is still > then ZERO , hence the probability of AN used for anything but fertilizer is by no means > then ZERO . It may be very small but still only ZERO= ZERO .
As per IMSBC code ( attached above) some A.N based fertilizers can go kaboom too with castrophic results as described above. Fertilizer sounds so innocent so benign associated mostly with food  by gen public.

And i am surprised a bit in Your trust in things taking place in Ruski Mir  as all your elloquent post here on this particular issue indicate You do not trust them at all, then why should I ???
So it is not a conspiracy theory but a possibility irrespective of it’s remoteness.

The ship with no port to go to:

Yes I have spent most of my working life investigating and advising on risks, risk assessment and risk avoidance in shipping and offshore oil & gas industries.
Knowing the nature of risk with every venture is important, but exaggerating risk is a risk in itself,

Here is the latest IMSBC for carriage of AN fertilizer in bulk:

Yes I’m aware that a small percentage of AN is used to produce explosives for the mining and construction industries, but after it has been made into explosives it is not transported in bulk.

I’m also aware that AN based explosives has been used by terrorists.
A well known case is the terrorist attack in Norway in 2011:

The bomb used against the Government building in Oslo was made with AN that Behring Breivik had obtained by pretending to need it for a small farm he had purchased.

Ruby has left from her shelter near Andøya.
Her destination is given as Klaipeda, Lithuania:

PS> Nothing fund in Norwegian media as yet

Thought for sure there would be a post here about how fat American corn farming was the root cause of the Beirut explosion.

Thanks for the self control Dr. Bugge.

No fat Americans involved in corn farming in the Midwest caused this mess, nor cause any explosion in Beirut AFAIK.

It appears that the M/V Ruby has an escort on the passage to Klaipeda.
The AHT Amber II is following close behind according to marinetraffic.com

Passing Ålesund today:

She has been inspected by NMD and the class (DNV) Cleared for the passage to Klaipeda.
PS> Nobody is panicking here.

No. Nothing suspicious about an Ammonium Nitrate Cargo ex-Russia being dispatched to Klaipeda for “repairs”. Nope. Nothing there interests Russia’s FSB. Not any LNG facilities or an anti-Russian government. Nope…. Hammer away folks.

The damaged Russian-linked cargo ship Ruby, carrying 20,000 tons of ammonium nitrate, the same substance that exploded in the port of Beirut in 2020, will sail into the Baltic Sea this weekend, Danish newspaper Information and the investigative collective Danwatch report.

In early September, the 183-meter-long vessel was refused permission by Norwegian authorities to remain in the port of Tromso in the north of the country . A 500-meter safety zone was established around the ship. Norway’s largest hospital is nearby.

According to Danish media, the Ruby, with seven times more ammonium nitrate than the amount of this compound that exploded in Beirut, is heading for Klaipėda. Lithuanian authorities have refused to allow it to dock, but they will allow it if the ship manages to unload its cargo in another port.

The vessel is expected to enter Denmark’s Great Belt, a strait between the islands of Funen and Zealand, connected by a bridge, before the weekend. The captain has not ordered a pilot through the difficult, shallow and narrow Danish straits.

The Ruby is controlled by a Lebanese company owned by Syrians, and carries cargo from Russia. The ship is registered in Malta.

The vessel, bound for the port of Las Palmas on Mallorca, sailed from the Russian port of Kandalaksha in Murmansk Oblast but ran aground. Despite this, the vessel sailed 1,600 km with damage before reaching Tromso. An inspection revealed six defects, including cracks in the hull and damage to the propeller and rudder. It also found irregularities in the crew’s sailing qualifications. The vessel is having to use a tugboat.

According to Jacob Kaarsbo, an analyst at the Danish institute Think Tank Europe, quoted by “Information” and Danwatch, after sailing into Tromso, the ship was anchored for several days near the strategically important NATO air base in Andoya.

In his opinion, the ship’s links to Syria and Russia may indicate that it is taking part in Russian hybrid warfare . - It is important for the allies to unite in order to establish a strategy, so that Denmark or Norway do not have to deal with this problem alone - Kaarsbo emphasized. The damaged unit is to sail into the Baltic Sea this weekend - the Danish press warns.
Ships without insurance. Denmark has a problem
For several months, Denmark has been struggling with the problem of the so-called shadow fleet , i.e. old tankers from Gabon used by Russia after the introduction of sanctions in 2022. These units often do not have valid insurance.
In the Strait of Øresund south of Copenhagen in early March, the tanker MS Andromeda Star, used to transport Russian oil, collided with the merchant ship MS Peace. There was no leak then, because the Andromeda had no cargo. After the collision, the vessel had to be repaired at a shipyard in Odense.

  • The Russian “shadow fleet” is a real threat to the Baltic Sea. The Baltic Sea is threatened by Russia on many levels, in terms of environmental protection - said Pl P.M. Donald Tusk in April .

Lots of inaccuracies and irrelevant informations here.
How come they didn’t mention Texas City in 1947?

Ok. I have found sth else. Also some inaccuracies like " tanker" . But some interesting statements.
QUOTE:
No evidence of provocation

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis says there is no evidence that the ship requesting permission to enter the port of Klaipėda for repairs could be a provocation
or
To be unloaded elsewhere

The Klaipėda port’s CEO says that Ruby will unload its explosive cargo at another port and then the Lithuanian port will decide whether to let it in for repairs.
“We have found a port that agrees to receive and unload the cargo,” Algis Latakas told reporters in Klaipėda on Thursday. “It will be then decided whether this ship can come to Klaipeda for repairs.”

What port??? Why such a mystery.??? Then why should Denmark warn only Poland??

If acc to this link allegedly there is a suspicion it may be a part of Russian hybrid war against NATO , then I find it completely irrational to allow this ship into Baltic sea , which by no means is a NATO lake . Why such a huge deviation from the planned route???

To be on the safe side lets discharge this baby in Leningrad/ St. Petersburg as the cargo was allegedly loaded in Russia so surely they know best what it is . Why not? If Russia refuses then this RAT smells real bad.

Ship with Russian chemicals will not be allowed into Klaipėda port – PM - LRT

What is relevant re this story ?

Why should they mention it ??

If it gets safely into the Baltic, park it in Kaliningrad!

Mystery as Cargo Ship Laden with Ammonium Nitrate is Now Underway (maritime-executive.com)

Still drifting.

Sources like “Information” & Danwatch are quoting on the issue Mr. Jacob Kaarsbo -the anlalyst of the Danish Institute and Think Tank .

May be Dr. Bugge has some more info what is Mr.Jacob Kaarsbo saying ??

The same as I have said earlier; the Ruby was cleared to depart from Tromsø after being inspected by NMD and Class (DNV). If she had damages making her unseaworthy such permit would not have been give.

I don’t know if having an escort tug was a requirement for granting the permit, but it is a fact that the AHT Amber II has been with her since she left Vannvåg anchorage.
Maybe this was requested by the Master? Or the Owner/Charterer made the arrangement to send a tug from Rotterdam to follow her on the voyage as a precaution?

That she had some kind of engine trouble, or whatever, causing her to drift in open waters for a short while, can be seen on the AIS track. No sign that she is being towed then, or now.

She did a course alteration and slowed down for a while just outside Ålesund.
That was to allow the seismic vessel Atlantic Warrior to complete a turn with a full array of cables in tow.
Because she was heading east for a while there were speculations that she had trouble and were coming into the coast for shelter.

Again; she is carrying a cargo of AN, which cause knee jerk reactions because of the history of explosions in Tenjin (2015) and Beirut (2020), two explosions, which originated in a warehouse containing dangerous sodium cyanide.
These explosions were set off by fires started in the warehouses were the AN was stored.

BTW; Millions of tonnes of AN in pure form are carried as bulk cargos around the world every year without blowing up

M/V Ruby has changed course and destination:

Now bound for MARSAXLOKK with ETA 08/10, 2024 20:00 hrs.

It appears that Malta doesn’t want her in their territorial waters either:

PS> The Ruby has damages to ballast tanks, propeller and maybe rudder, none of which endanger the cargo spaces, or make the cargo go “kaboom”.

Here goes down the drain the much toted :

2003 IMO Guidelines on Places of Refuge for Ships in Need of Assistance were adopted (Resolution A.949(23))

Even flag state does not give the f… about it

Places of Refuge - EMSA - European Maritime Safety Agency (europa.eu)

All are scared shitless because they merge ammonia nitrite with recent Beirut scare of exploding pagers and UKFs . Who knows what was put in the cargo when she loaded in Russia .

What made me wonder is why when she was on anchorage near Tromso undergoing inspections and once given green light to sail she did not try to sail to Murmansk, which was only 410 nm away and elected to make a huge deviation to Klaipeda -1480 nm or about. It was reported repair contract was won by Klaipeda shipyard but I can not believe repairs or patch-ups were not cheaper in Russia Murmansk.

Very strange

And what the hell . Now the only option is to make STS in some cosy place. The only thing is to ask the Russians who manage shadow ops -they have huge expertise in the field  No need to cut the AIS as it may be labeled as save the planet from WW III
operation .

Remember the “Prestige”, the “Tampa Affair” and many more?

For the record; She was not refused shelter in Norway when requested by the Master.
She was moved away from the wharf in Tromsø after inspection of the damages as there were no facilities there to carry out necessary repairs, but allowed to proceed by both Norwegian Maritime Authorities and by her classification society (DNV) after an assessment of the condition and seaworthiness.

PS> Media reports mentioning the nature of her cargo and the fact that this type of fertilizer had been the source of the Beirut explosion in 2020 caused the present predicament for the Ruby, her crew, owners and charterers.

There are probably many other bulk carriers at sea and in ports, carrying the same type of cargo without any restrictions on port calls.

At the moment she is dead in the water near Margate, UK w/escort tug alongside:

What next for Ruby, will she be the modern day’s “Flying Dutchman”?
