Interview With U.S. Maritime Administrator Admiral Mark “Buzz” Buzby – Part 2

February 1, 2018 by Klaus Luhta

In this segment of the podcast Admiral Buzby shares his vision for the U.S. maritime industry. In case you missed it, you can view Part 1 of Klaus Luhta’s interview with the Admiral HERE.

The theme of leadership comes up again as the American maritime industry confronts a dramatically future. “We need to make it an industry people want to participate in,” says Buzby. “We also need to embrace the new technology out there.”

Autonomous vessels are clearly on the agenda of the Maritime Administration and the Maritime Administrator is aware of the potential impact on the industry and mariners. MARAD even recently held a half-day conference on vessel automation to get ahead of the issue.

When it comes to positive change, Admiral Buzby looks to cargo as a way to ensure the future growth of the industry. Cargo is king when it comes to shipping and more cargo means more growth.

The current Maritime Administration faces a number of challenges and a future certain to bring change. Having Admiral Buzby at the helm assures many in the industry that it can not only endure the change but experience growth throughout.

“looks to cargo as a way to ensure the future growth of the industry”? what kind of nonsense is this? there are hundreds of millions of tons of cargo both coming and going out of US ports BUT JUST NOT ON US FLAGGED SHIPS! Your job Admiral is to ensure that not be the case per the Merchant Marine Act of 1936 which I urge you to actually read. Its preamble says quite clearly…

SECTION 101. It is necessary for the national defense and development of its foreign and domestic commerce that the United States shall have a merchant marine

(a) sufficient to carry its domestic water-borne commerce and a substantial portion of the water-borne export and import foreign commerce of the United States and to provide shipping service on all routes essential for maintaining the flow of such domestic and foreign water-borne commerce at all times

It is hereby declared to be the policy of the United States to foster the development and encourage the maintenance of such a merchant marine.

no new legislation need be passed by Congress…all that is needed are policies coming from YOU to make damned sure the Act is followed! GET ON IT…SIR!

and as an aside…who the FUCK is this teletubby clown Luhta anyway? he must be a paid shill for MarAd! wonder how much he gets to produce this mashed babyfood anyway?

He was my second mate several years ago, solid mariner, knows his stuff on deck and in the wheelhouse.

and I am sure a most highly esteemed KP alumni

That’s on my list of things I don’t give a shit about.

Luhta is a tiny fish…the one to go after is Buzby…just another mouthpiece for foreign vessels and owners, seems like all MarAd cares about these days besides KP is ports and all the foreign vessels that call at them. I would think a man like you should be up in arms fighting for US flagged vessel services including expanding the MSP which I believe you personally benefit from?

I support the U.S. Merchant Marine.

If anyone wants to know about Luhta I can say I had him as second mate and he’s a solid mariner on deck and in the wheelhouse

That just means he was a decent crewman, it doesn’t mean he is worth the oxygen he consumes in Washington.

and based in the value of the interview conducted that is oxygen thoroughly wasted…not one hard hitting or pointed question put to the good Admiral

I still say Luhta is a propagandist paid by MarAd to present them and Admiral Buzz as actually in charge and doing the job (which so far is pretty much false news)

I believe he is currently the VP of gulf ports and something to do with special projects for the MM&P.
