Parents Association just send an email quoting Okon that there is a good possibility one of the NSMV’s will be mobilized for up to 160 days. So which one?
NSMV 3 (Maine Maritime) and 4 (Texas A&M) came into service this year. NSMV 4 is brand new, NSMV 3 has been used for one sea term this summer.
NSMV 2 (Mass Maritime) came into service in the fall of 2024, and has been used for two sea terms. Since Mass does its sea terms over the winter break, mobilizing this ship will have an immediate affect on that school’s curriculum
NSMV 1 (New York Maritime) is the oldest coming into service in the fall of 2023. It has been on three sea terms, although the first in the summer of 2024 was cut short due to mechanical difficulties. If NSMV 1 is mobilized in October for 160 days it could be back by March, which would allow two months for it to be refitted for the the 2027 sea term next summer (on paper anyway.) Based on this, if a NSMV is mobilized it seems likely Empire State VII will be given the call.
Empire State VII is currently crewing up for activation. From what we’ve been hearing it leaves sometime in the fall for the Persian Gulf — no one knows why.
I have no actual information but the word is there are very few rooms(Zero)at NGIS or billeting on DG. This has been a problem many times in the past. They have even tied up ships (Stockham)to the pier to house B52 pilots many years ago. The Empire State would provide many beds for the needy on DG. I have seen how packed the Seaman’s club has been lately on their facebook page. The island must be jammed.
Why the sob story and ‘anxiety’…. It’s called shipping. How many various cadets from ALL the schools died in WW 2 during sea term? It was well over 100. Is there even going to be a single cadet abd? Pretty sure nobody is going to get torpedoed by a Wolfpack on this ‘mission.’ Worst thing will be a contracted STD from a lady boy on DG.
MARAD didn’t build these ships just to give them away for sea year. This is exactly the goofy shit they were built for.

I don’t know why they’re sobbing and needing counselors on hand while their NSMV does a mission for “national security.” It’s even in the name of the vessel class for crying out loud. Suck it up buttercup, stop crying like KP’ers, and consider that your ship is the most broken-in of all the ones delivered so far. They don’t want it breaking down in the middle of the transit because some Philly yard worker left a rag in a pipe that hasn’t been found yet.
I think pretty much all cadets whine about schedules these days…. The MECL run is inconvenient, I couldn’t get a commercial ship this year because I had to go on summer cruise, I couldn’t get on a tanker because there weren’t any available (nonsense I’ve heard repeatedly), I couldn’t get a ship because there was no available sea partner, one lame ass excuse after another.
Go ahead and complain to all the guys that got stuck onboard for an extra 3-6 months during COVID. And if they won’t listen, I’m sure the Alliance Fairfax will welcome you with open ears.
True… but they’re offering the cadets counselors for… this.
He’s class of 91, so he’s solid Gen-X… the feral generation that saw the space shuttle explode in school and then took a quiz and went to lunch. Now, cadets might need counselors just because their ship is going away for a little while.
I’m a current Schuyler cadet. I hate this type of infantilizing shit my friends were all making of fun of the counseling thing in the email. It’s kind of insulting. Honestly it’s the parents association they always freak out.
I look at the old photos in the fort and I wish I could have attended Maritime back in the 50s when they had pistols and swordfighting. We used to be a proper country.
Honest question… I’ve done some more thinking on this, and aside from the fact that it literally just got delivered, why aren’t they using Lone Star State I wonder? Yes, there would be the new build bugs to be worked out that SUNY has worked their ass off to fix, but it hasn’t even made it to campus yet to get all the crap that comes with being a floating classroom that has to be removed either.
MARAD and DoD could see first hand what their money buys from Philly, they could have the boat faster (hell, it’s underway at this moment and they could just pop in to a port and swap the crew, load up, and go for DG), and it hasn’t been established as part of the campus and spare dorm space like ES VII has.
I’ve made a call there since the Iran stuff started. DG is packed. Lots of ships rotating through the dock. The lines at the Ship’s Store are long and slow, even during “off” hours. They had all registers open one of the times I stopped in and it still took almost an hour to get to the counter.
I think that the logistics system is still trying to sort out losing pretty much every hub in the Middle East all at once. Not having an STS crane for the dock is certainly not helping.
Dumb question, but is there any reason why one of the recently replaced training ships shouldn’t (or couldn’t) be re-activated to support SUNY’s operations as a backfill? Or lend them one of the other ready reserve vessels?
