They are always hiring. Should tell you something.
Its a place where you can work for dismal wages to gain experience.

Sure, it tells me if you want to go to work you can go there. Here is another tip; find out which captain is the biggest flaming asshole. He always needs a mate.

the mates are almost exclusively NOAA Corps blueberries…a more useless bunch of “uniformed service” nematodes one will find
my suggestion is everyone should take an OS job on a NOAA vessel and when I give the signal, toss every blueberry off into a rubber raft with a pint of water to share between them, a hand compass and a revolver.

Yes, I meant in general, Tip # 1 you are more likely to get hired at places that are always hiring… Tip # 2: asshole captains always need mates.
They’re exceptional at making securité calls, you must admit that.

Truer words were never spoken.
It’s a good place to gain time and experience to upgrade. The ships are out most of the year except for winter upkeep, shipyard or if tits-up for some reason. If you want sea time this is not a bad place to get it. It’s a very good place for a noob to get a foot in the door. People come as a GVA and leave with an AB or QMED ticket and do just fine on tugs, ferries etc.
if you are looking for oil and gas wages this is not the place…not at all. Oil patch guys will be disappointed unless they readjust their priorities.

I’d be happy to direct anyone to USAb-jobs.com to staff the boats run by amateur hour, wanna be military blue berries and wack pack ex-professional fishermen for slave wages and crumby schedules.

Sure, but the unlimited tonnage time I got there was well worth the shit sandwich.

Except that they don’t hire through USAJOBS anymore. It’s direct hire now.

Ah ok. So you apply directly to the offices in Newport/Norfolk? Interesting. And I do apologize to the OP for the rant. If you are young and starting out it is a decent place to work with a lot of interesting people that cycle through the vessels. Cool places to go not including Douche Harbor. And there are a few NOAA corpses that are competent sailors and I tip my hat to them. And they gave me all my unlimited time towards my license and paid for 60% of my STCW classes…aww shucks. I love you NOAAAAAA…sniff…sniff…
P.S. Good luck with the O.D. Mike. You deserve it.
