No tax on Overtime effects on the industry

Must have been the stage 9 cancer

From what I’ve seen, overtime wages will not be exempt from Social Security and Medicare taxes, further reducing the realized benefit.

Also, the admin has to publish a list of qualified professions that qualify to be exempt from overtime taxes. What are the odds the maritime industry will be overlooked and mariners will not be exempt from OT taxes?

One thing that may actually allow Mariners to qualify for the No tax on overtime, would be an FLSA highly compensated employee exemption.
As 29 CFR 541.601 Section D states that the Highly compensated employee only applies to those whose primary duty includes office or non-manual labor, It does not apply to those in non management with call outs such as operating engineers, longshoremen.

Only issue is the management/non management line gets hairy. 29 CFR 541.102 also has definitions for management including setting and adjusting work hours, planning work, ordering supplies. So, where it would fall would be interesting.

Some of the Language above is taken and modified from the original CFR language, so feel free to look them up and interpret the laws yourself.

Wow, freaking WOW. The liberal talking point from the Democrats is it’s a better investment to give hundreds of BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to the Military Industrial Complex to Ukrainians to get killed putting Russians in body bags compared to letting the working poor & the middle class keep their hard earned Overtime Time money & tips. How your once semi-noble party has fallen? JFK & FDR wouldn’t be Democrats if they were alive today. So sad so many on the left still pretend to be the party of the working class while in fact the Dems live in the pocket of the MIL & big government bureaucracy.

JFK disagrees with you. His own words:

“My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man”

“Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.

This much we pledge–and more.”

“To those old allies whose cultural and spiritual origins we share, we pledge the loyalty of faithful friends. United there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures. Divided there is little we can do–for we dare not meet a powerful challenge at odds and split asunder.”

“The path we have chosen for the present is full of hazards, as all paths are. The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender, or submission.“

(Compare to Cheeto jesus: ‘Zelenskyy, give me half of your mineral wealth or you’re fucked.’)

…and as to the current administration and the national debt. From the AP today:

“President Donald Trump faces the challenge of convincing Republican senators, global investors, voters and even Elon Musk that he won’t bury the federal government in debt with his multitrillion-dollar tax breaks package…

“All of this rhetoric about cutting trillions of dollars of spending has come to nothing — and the tax bill codifies that,” said Michael Strain, director of economic policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, a right-leaning think tank. “There is a level of concern about the competence of Congress and this administration and that makes adding a whole bunch of money to the deficit riskier.”

Both JFK & RDF were so prolific in the words & writings a person could use their quotes to attempt to prove any point they wanted. But for you to cherry pick JFK’s quotes to paint them as warmongers with Russia like the modern day Democrats proves my point that neither JFK or FDR would have anything to do with the modern day Democrats & liberal philosophy. Both of those former presidents went their whole terms doing their damnest to avoid war with the USSR/Russia & helping the working poor & middle class. To think they would approve or be happy about use US missiles, US guidance systems & US satellites to kill Russians on Russia soil like modern day Democrats is Ridiculous. Without a doubt, 100%, I believe FDR & JFK would overwhelming support tax breaks on the working poor & middle class in the form of taxfree tips & overtime compared to unlimited amount of money to the military industrial complex in hopes of WW3 as the current day Democrats want. But they’re both dead. Believe what you want about them.

And we pivot back. Looks like your arithmetic needs some work. It’s more like $128 billion since the beginning of the war. As a fraction of the nearly trillion a year for the total defense budget, looks like an awesome deal.

Spending on Ukraine

Friend, FDR invented big government bureaucracy. He presided over the largest increase of federal government bureaucracy ever, including the SSA. And Republicans hated him for it. Hated him for creating the NRA, the CCC, the WPA. To this day many Republicans revile him as a Communist for it.

And now you’re arguing FDR would be against the bureaucracy he himself created? I’m unconvinced.

Both you, freighterman1 & many pro-war, left leaning or Democrats have said the US should support Ukraine with as much help as possible until Russia gives up. So no. An endless proxy war compared to a tax break for the working poor & middle class I guess is way modern day Democrats roll. No longer the party of the working class, more for the MIC now.

That’s where our disagreement lies. That’s your view of the war. My view is that we are telling dictators that invading free European nations will not be tolerated.

Two completely different viewpoints.

…and nobody ever said it was an either or proposition. The issue is, and always has been, how will the shortfall be paid for. And will the uber rich pay their fair share.

That and it’s an incredible opportunity to test and improve our technology and equipment in a real world scenario against the foe it was designed to defeat in the first place. All without putting our service members “into the breach” so to speak.

Political reason: it maintains the principle that dictators invading European countries will not be tolerated.

Realpolitik reason: it expands NATO, and only with a numerous ally can we expect to win a war against an enemy five times our size.

Military reason: see @jbtam99 above.

Financial reason: we now supply Europe with a multibillion dollar trade in natural gas, a completely new source of revenue for us.

I would actually say that Ronald Reagan wouldn’t be a Republican today. Reagan was willing to put his money where his mouth was when defending fledgling democracy in Eastern Europe against the oppression of Communism.

He also understood the value immigrants bring to the US and fought to grant amnesty to roughly 3 million undocumented immigrants in the United States.

Our support for Ukraine is way more about China and Taiwan than it is about Russia. It is critical that we demonstrate our willingness to support smaller democracies against powerful totalitarians. I would MUCH rather ship weapons to Ukraine than see American soldiers die on the beaches of Taiwan.

If a politician today were to use Reagan quotes without telling people MAGA would call them a liberal communist.

For Democrats, yes on both positions. Not 1 single Democrat in the House of Representatives voted to lift the burdens from the backs of the working poor & middle class by eliminating the tax on them for overtime & on tips. But they all voted unanimously “yes” for any of the BILLIONS given to the military industrial complex for the death of Ukrainians & Russians in Eastern Europe. That shows Lefties & Democrats care very much for the pockets of the military industrial complex & very little for the working poor & middle class to me. Don’t believe me? Ask any waiter or any one who depends on tips to survive what they think about the people in Congress who voted for them to continue paying taxes on tips.
