Most of the threats to personal safety in one’s chosen career can be predicted, although few are guaranteed. If you are a coal miner you can bet that if this is your life’s work (and for many it is due to union contracts, geographical limitations, and limited skill sets), getting black lung is a sure thing.
What’s your point? Tell us something another expert such as oregonblitzkrieg hasn’t already.
Didn’t the yearly MSHA refresher training help you feel safer doing your job…? We went 7 years without a ticket, till the inspector told us “no one goes this long”, would you like a little one or a big one…?
Anyone else note that the book is entitled “Deep Sea and Foreign Going” in all distribution except the US? I found that interesting.
Just another journalist who took a ride on a ship and thinks she knows what she is talking about. Soon enough the other journos will stop jerking her off for mutual support and It will be just another book with disappointing sales on amazon.
She wonders why we haven’t read the book? I’m too busy to waste my time reading garbage. Period.
The refresher training was almost as big a joke as MSHA’s blaster safety workshops at Beckley (Beaver) that were “hands-on”.
They seemed to give a lot of people a pass just because they showed up and had a pulse. I had as much experience and more training than the instructor (MSHA metal/ non-metal/coal inspector) and provided most of the instruction on use of digital detonators.
One shop I was at was out of compliance for weeks because they didn’t provide site specific training for anyone on a new account. During that same time the MSHA inspector must have shown up at least 3 times and never asked for anyone’ certification.
Wow, so having read through this thread I’m now convinced that a fair share of seafarers are idiots, racists and misogynists, well done!
Reading the book will be interesting, surely Rose George cannot have written a depiction of mariners that is as dismal as the one some of you guys just painted.

Then again, some are just pretentious…and not just mariners. That includes our critics also.
Idiots, yeah, go back to your book club please

Rose’s alter ego, most likely. Or her publicist.
