New to this forum and looking for work

#1

Presently I am affiliated with the SIU and hold an A/B unlimited and the tankerman assist end.
that’s a pretty brief bio I guess…I also have a fifteen year old son and a fully functional marriage. Deep draft isn’t exactly what I am looking for, but I am not all together opposed to it either. In a perfect world I think an ATB would be a great fit, but at this phase in my game I’m open to pretty much anything, especially suggestions.
I served in the USCG for seven years, got out in '98 and built boats for five years. In '03 I went back to school to finish my degree. IN '05 I got back underway on UNOLS research vessel which began my career as a legitimate mariner. Of course the term “legitimate” may imply that at some point I was on the dark side…there is a bit of longlining in my past…and a whole lot of big game fishing…
this being my first post it’s safe to say that I have next to no clue about this forum and it’s inmates…so if I seem a bit"off" let me know.
A!

tough crowd…

 Not a tough crowd- but kind of a rambling post.

Which probably explains the lack of responses…

You’re more likely to get a concise answer- if you ask a concise question.

Anyhoo-

With regards to ATB’s- have you applied with Crowley? Or anyone else?

Lastly- it’s a TIGHT job market. Apply EVERYWHERE- and be persistent.

I’ve met lots of captains applying for OS spots- and not having any luck.

This forum is filled with helpful, knowledgeable folks (and Captain Anonymous;))

Post a specific question and I’m sure you’ll get lots of help.

Have blessed day-Anthony

What are you saying Anthony, C_A is in a category all by himself?

Hey sea star welcome to the form I joined not to long ago and they form has been most helpful espically when I can’t get a straight answer from the coast guard. There is a wealth of information here. Don’t worry about your dark side we all have them.I do have a question to ask you, I was under the impression the SIU was a good union as far as finding work but if your looking guess not.

As a new comer, it is important to under stand that nothing get done around here without a little pocket green under the table. If you want conversation that is free. If you need a job, the glen gary leads are gonna cost ya!

O S…I do have a tendency to ramble…especially during the small hours. I haven’t been scared off, just busy. seems I have reverted to contributing to the decimation of bluefin to pay the bills. to answer your questions, yes I have applied at Crowley and others…thing is crowley told me I needed the tankermans assist, so I got it. just like many fields it helps to have an “in”…and so I do with Crowley, and with talk of new builds entering the fleet I am in limbo until I hear from them…supposedly between Jan. and April. It’s difficult to have faith in an inside connection having heard nothing from the company on this as yet. As far as other companies go, I haven’t gotten a lot of response on the numerous resume packages I’ve mailed/E-mailed…things seem rough all over.
"…the glen gary leads are gonna cost ya." alright studbuzzar, I got ya’ wheels take grease to roll…can you tell me more? at present I’m busy making money and tuna willing I’ll have some to spread around, but in what direction do I need to be throwing it?

Sea Star
There’s been many changes at Crowley since I worked there. There was a clause in the SIU contract saying they had the right to hire the best qualified hands on the manpower list for the ATBs. The ATBs are under Inland so you rarely see them on the board. The ITBs are deep sea.

If you have contacted Crowley and are a member in good standing, they’re subject to call you at any time. I hear a second DEU has been added to the ATBs. Make sure your clinic card is up to date. They’re sticklers for that.

I don’t know if it is still required, but in the past, they had new-hires report to a Crowley/MTL contracted industrial clinic for a pulse and piss test.

Good luck!

good luck with the job hunt. remember, the end of the year is a tough time to find a job (in any industry and in any economic cycle) as many companies are closing out the books on 2009 and not yet implemented new programs for 2010. be patient, be diligent, and follow up on every lead. most importantly DON’T TAKE ANY REJECTIONS PERSONALLY.
my specific short term advice: stay at home for the holidays with the family & try not to focus too much on the elephant in the corner, collect some Obama bucks, then hit it hard 2nd week of January. Who knows - in this industry it may be the last time you’ll be home for the holidays for a few years…

Where do you get those? Afganistan?

#13

I’ve been wondering the same thing…And when you do find them ,are they worth anything?

Welcome aboard Sea Srar, speaking only for myself, of course I am a “bit” off. I work on boats don’t I???

hey rjbpilot & shellback:
Obama bucks are just some of the massive free govt money floating around; not too hard to get if so inclined. But my mistake, I didn’t realize SeaStar was working right now (tuna), so shame on me for not reading his post closer.

Roger that. My grand kids will be paying for it all. It was just an attempt at humor…
