That’s called a typo Johnny, thank God you caught it. I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t. Do you go around correcting everyone’s grammar? I bet you’re a blast to sail with. I mean you have such great opinions on EVERYTHING and you correct grammar on anonymous forums. You must feel so superior, I really hope you do, because where would the world of online forums be without grammar police. I mean everybody knows they teach classes in the academy on typing with your iphone… Your grammar corrections are like the school yard equivalent of saying “I’m telling”. Did you get picked on a lot? Here’s some sound advice for you, don’t post on here while you’re on your period…
I just read this post for the first time and I want to tell you SIR…
HOS is trying to pinch pennies on their new boats that cost a fraction of a new box boat or tanker, so yes, cheap Asian labor and the US government almost rewarding businesses going over seas has really hurt deep sea. If the government would get behind us and stop acting like the Jones Act is such a bad thing, we would be a powerhouse of the seas again. But considering the government is booting Americans out the military and letting illegals join, I don’t expect we will ever get much support. You already know the answer about the Navy and MSC ships, they don’t have a budget and profit is not a factor for them since we pay to make them run… (Taxes)
The USMM needs to be a United front. When pro Union and anti Union USMM argue amongst each other we become counterproductive to the growth and security of a post WWII merchant marine. The general public doesn’t even know who we are or what we do. The non Union companies have almost no existing representatives for the USMM. once again it’s about grassroots efforts to gain support and votes for the protection and reversal of the present and past wrongs that have shifted work from American sailors to foreign sailors. The average American wants a USA sailor delivering his product . He just has to know its up to the average American to step up and vote for these crucial policy changes. As for Union corruption. Pay attention to your representatives and vote them in or out as needed. Arm chair quarterbacks never have been the ones to make that crucial play . This is our time and it’s time to make the big play.
Quick question…
c capt…are u the same c capt. that use to post on that captains booty site?
the site that went to shit because it turned into a political discussion forum instead of a mariner
related forum. I might be confused, it was a long time ago. Were you the “republican” guy or the
"Democrat" guy that was always arguing about something? Again…i could be totally mistaken.
This is a serious question…

serious answer which is no, that was not me
one will note that I am a constant fighter to keep this forum politics free even though I too sometimes fall off the wagon and go political (but not often!)
now, I must know…what on earth was the captain’s booty site?
No politics! What’s! How many discussions can you possibly have about traffic congestion, raises, Chouest housing, floating McDonald’s and ABs that can’t tie up a boat.
If you would like to compare failures in the OSV to shipping industry’s I would take you up on that challenge. Although the AIVIQ was certainly a fail it would pale in comparison to Exxon Valdez.
Not a good comparison. E.V was a high consequence incident but the causes were farily mudane (loss of situatial awareness, fatigue, complacency)
I think cc’s point is that the A/K (Aiviq/ Kulluk) incident was at least partly due to a workboat approach to a difficult towing job.

There certainly are times that this thread degenerates to the trivial and the mundane but I maintain it will become a sewer if partisan politics becomes commonplace here. That said, we certainly can complain about our elected leaders in a nonpartisan fashion which I believe is necessary and healthy. Although a fervent Democrat, I feel our President cares not one lick about having a US flag merchant marine and only gives it pablum flavored lip service during events like Maritime Day which are written by some no name staffer. When he made his massive gaff about supertankers calling in Savannah because of the Panama Canal being widened shows that the man is beyond obtuse when it comes to merchant shipping. Further the appointment of David Matsuda as his first MarAd administrator was even more telling that the word “maritime” is not in the man’s lexicon!
Actually I believe we were talking about Bayou mariners verses seasoned UL crews and he brought up the AIVIQ. I chose to use the EV as an example of mistakes being made by seasoned UL crews because it was in Alaska. Neither was a good incident but if I had to choose which one I would have to deal with…
So you guys go around correcting spelling and typos, calling southerners inbreeds, getting all up and arms and stompy feet about every little thing and I’m a douche. That’s rich. I think from now on I’ll call you Capt Stompy feet. It fits.

Well I can’t speak for CC but as far as I know there is no reason to think that the mariners in the Bayou are any worse or any better then those elsewhere. I’ve met lots of top notch mariners from there.

Well they can drive a boat well enough but ask them about AC frequency drives and all you get is a blank look
Stomp stomp. And can I just say Jesus, you sure spend a lot of time on here. How can you hold a watch when you spend all day stomping your feet and throwing hissy fits about CG licenses? You just sound like an old man who has watched the world pass him by. It’s sad really, all that stomping and no one cares…

Yes, that’s right, I’m a born and bred (to be read inbred) Mississippian who has stated it many, many times on here. K through 12 in central MS and now I live here again.
And I’m one of those guys who goes around calling other southerners inbred while I hail from the poorest, 2nd fattest (no worries, we’ll get the title back from those fat fucks who stole it away last year), dumbest state in the union.
You guys make this forum worth reading. I mean where else can you and Capt Stompy feet get to feel superior and I can watch two grown men whine all day and night. You don’t see me on here bitching all the time about what is the right way (read as “my way”) is the only way to do something. You don’t see me complaining about someone starting a thread about something that’s already been talked about and then proceed to beat a dead horse about licensing again and again. You don’t see me jumping up and down saying “it’s not fair, I had to sail on a ship”. Rules are rules and rules change and evolve and if you don’t evolve with them you will be left behind as a grumpy old man sitting in the galley bitching while everyone else just tries to avoid your miserable ass. Call me a dipshit if you want, I could give a fuck, but I figure out what I need to do and do it. If someone asks for help and I can provide it I help. I just get fucking tired of all you guys that go off on your “back when boats were made of wood and men were made of steel” like everyone that came along after you is somehow impossibly incompetent. So yeah, I’m a dipshit, an asshole, etc whatever. But you two are miserable know it all fuckheads that offer your opinions for no other reason than you just like to hear yourselves talk and probably because you think other people are impressed… Just so you don’t forget I’ll stick around and poke you guys with a stick every now and then just to remind you that most everyone on here doesn’t give a shit what you think.

go ahead and poke your stick SIR! You are hardly the first to try to set me straight and you will not likely be the last. One thing that JC and I have that many others here don’t is a broad view of the US maritime industry that comes from working in more than one little isolated sector of it. With broader experience comes increased knowledge. With increased knowledge comes learned opinion.
Something your pointy head is short of I’d reckon…
btw, only you and very few others don’t give a shit about what I think…I’d wager that the majority here do care and appreciate the commentary. Only a few who are buttsore over my opinions are a very small population here. Sorry to have wounded your delicate little fanny! And you are still a douche…
Why are you worried about the frequency of their air conditioned car rides?
I pray that you sir are not one of the ignorant, near illiterate boobs like the engineers I encountered at OCLLC who literally had no knowledge of variable AC frequency control of propulsion motors even though their own ship was equipped with Siemens Simovert VFD drives!
…

We give a shit?
Not sayin’ the dude isn’t still a douche, but please, Cap, refrain from characterizing the nature of our cares.
It is likely we are far more entertained and amused than caring.
