Ref: (a) OPNAVINST 5400.44A

 1. Purpose. To approve the disestablishment of military departments on Military Sealift Command’s United States Naval Ships (USNS), per reference (a).

 2. Background. This disestablishment action is as a result of Program Objective Memorandum Fiscal Year 2013 budget issues that approved the elimination of all military departments aboard USNS ships and approved the use of civilian substitution to put civilian mariners with appropriate experience into the positions that the military personnel had occupied. All military personnel, 21 officers and 178 enlisted, are reassigned to other positions.

 3. Organizational Changes. Effective immediately, disestablish the following USNS military departments:

Your title to this thread is misleading. The military folks have been replaced and have been long gone for awhile, this document eliminates the various forms of the address’

Now they’ll take away AFN and Navy movies because we’re not military.
Now they’ll take away AFN and Navy movies because we’re not military.
Naw, it’s authorized for DOD, DOS etc. civilians.
Now they’ll take away AFN and Navy movies because we’re not military.
No, you won’t lose your movies. We have them, too. And we don’t have anything that even remotely resembles a military (take that, noaa corps)(speaking of what should go away)

If only they would hire faster…

It’s the gub-mint. They take awhile. What did you apply for? Some positions are very competitive.

I applied for the Ordinary Seaman Advancement Program. My dream entry-level job. I suppose that makes it one of the more competitive ones, right?

You are better off going in as a SU. Last two neo classes the unlicensed has been 80% SU and 20% wiper for entry level.

MSC All Entry Levels open 18-22 Aug 2014

I served on the USNS John Lenthall from 2012 to 2013. Does anyone know what they did with all the administrative paperwork for the active-duty sailors?

There’s an award that I am trying to find that was given to me as an EOT from the Lenthall.

Could it be because the Navy is currently undermanned?
Seems to be the common military practice to fill the gaps in some positions by hiring expensive civilian contractors.

Are the civilian mariners really that “expensive” when they can run engine and deck departments with a quarter or less the people. Also they don’t cost the taxpayers money with the sweat government retirement plan, life-long VA benefits, and G.I. I would make the case that even with the most expensive health care plans and union pensions that private mariners are a whole hell of a lot cheaper than military to operate non combat ships.
