confusion about the buoys

Is it bad luck to be amused by someone else’s mishap? Or in this case the explanation of the mishap? The comments were interesting as well.

I think I was looking for an explanation, how can one be a prudent mariner and not look at a navigational chart?

I know there are guys out there that don’t look at the chart much. My first job a mate was with Capt Doug running Seattle to Dutch on a small break bulk. I think Coastal Transportation has most of that business now. The place I worked was Express Marine. When I got hired the boss asked me if I could navigate up the inside. When I didn’t answer right away he said “we have charts.” So I said yes, I could.

Doug used the chart to show me where he wanted me to go but otherwise he just navigated from memory. He learned as a fisherman by following the lead boat till he knew the run. Sometimes if we went somewhere he’d not been in a long time he’d have me read the chart. I’d tell him which way to go and he’d yell “Are you sure?” Yup, let’s go.
