Music on the bridge while on watch?

Music has kept my ragged ass from falling asleep at the wheel many a time. Mostly when I was a commercial fisherman and prone to multiple day trips with no sleep. But also at times in the oilfield when I had to pull my 12 then spend most of (sometimes all) the new guys 12 helping him learn the ropes, or making sure he doesnt crash the boat. Music is what yu make it… a blessing or a curse. As long as there is no VDR in my wheelhouse or stupid Gestapo microphones you will find me rockin out most watches…

Last ship I was on the first Captain didn’t care about music and we had the iPod with 17k songs rocking 24/7. He left, new guy showed up, and wanted noooooooo music at all. He said that since we had the VDR, no go. Meanwhile, anyone ever heard the playback of a VDR? You can barely hear yourself if you stand 3 inches from it and scream into it…at least ours.

Ah well…what he didn’t know wasn’t going to hurt him…you could always tell when he was coming up the ladderwell :).

Clearly what is needed here is a Coast Guard approved play list. But before that happens, there will have to be STCW required courses for (a) near coast easy listening and (b) rockin out on the open seas. I can see it now. $200 for each exam. And a $50 discount if you include it with your flashing light.

Ipod + speakers, can’t beat that, though radio commentary is a plus sometimes

No No No, this is not an exam you can take at the REC, you will have to find a place like you do for flashing lights and pay them the money.

Make it like VSO where they delegate course approvals to MARAD and shove through the requirements before anybody teaches it. That way I can pay $1,000 for a day and a half class (just classroom lecture mind you. nothing hands on to justify the outragous fee) like I had to do at Falk Alford for my VSO.

PMC wins the thread!

Nothing like some good Rob Zombie or Metallica playing softly in the background while cruising around Fourchon. Then again, have to switch over to some Frank Sanatra if I have an old guy up here with me…
