Military Sealift Command

I spoke to an MSC recruiter recently. He told me they’re currently short on ABs and applicants will be processed in fairly short order. I can’t wait to get my AB ticket…

EDIT: One question - the MSC website states that once your tour ends and you are on leave, you continue to receive your base salary. At the same time, I hear that there is such a thing as a unpaid leave. Can someone reconcile this discrepancy please?

I would guess it’s because paid leave is only a few weeks to a month per deployment. If you stay home after that you’re on unpaid leave.

Not sure how they work it now. but when I was there it was called leave without pay. If you wanted to stay off after running out of paid leave, you were supposed to call in and ask if you could stay off without pay.

Thanks Phoenix and Seadog. Someone else cleared it up for me as well. Besides the lack of time off, MSC, seems like a good package overall.
At least I was open and honest. And my friend can attest to it. try 33 yrs of MSC ( more shit comming) is what it means. ask a 3rd mate also. I just did it for the experience not for life.
What’s the pay period, e.g. monthy, bi-weekly?

When was the last time anyone saw MSC call for OSs? I’m ready to pounce…
When was the last time anyone saw MSC call for OSs? I’m ready to pounce…
Don’t hold your breath. For entry ratings they usually call for Steward Utilitymen. If you get hired on as S/U, then try for a lateral transfer to the deck department.

They had OS/Wiper/SU open for the better part of 6 months from late last year till about April of this year. I would imagine you will likely see OS Advancement open up again late this year.

I applied twice to entry level last year and failed to advance in the hiring process both times. I’m going to guess its an extremely competitive process. Your chances get better with more seagoing experience you have, obviously.

The most important part of the application process is your KSAs. You need to learn how to write your essays in a way that they hit the topics MSC is looking for in hiring. I’d recommend you read the duties section of the announcement and utilize those duties in addressing your skills in your KSAs.

Great to know, thanks.

I’m thinking about making the long drive to Virginia to visit the MSC job fair this Wednesday.

edit: helpful information from everyone, thanks again.

I wrote up fairly thurough KSAs and gave them just about everything they’re looking for and then some. Only to find out later that the application I submitted included very little of what I wrote. Its a technical issue that the folks at the Support Center didn’t care to address when I brought it up to them. Hopefully, I won’t go through that again.

I was in an NEO class last April. 6 SUs and over 20 new OSs and an assortment of other classifications. Most of those OSs had no sailing experience. None. Never been on a ship or close to one. Funny how MSC works. 4 of the 6 SU were prior Navy. the 5th had a 100 Ton Master license and the 6th SU was a Sailor (Large cruising and racing sail boats)for over 25 years IIRC.

Sailing with those same OS class mates now as they try to obtain their ratings (RFPNW). Babes in the woods at first. Now they are turning out to be decent seaman.

your right OT is your friend…LOL

you must either be a 2nd MATE or a 2 A/E or higher making nice checks like those…

Is that for a two week pay period as a 3rd Mate?!?
Is that for a two week pay period as a 3rd Mate?!?
Looks about right. MSC pays on a tonnage scale, so a 3rd Mate on a big ship working OT everyday can pull 6k per pay period without too much trouble. That being said, get stuck on one of the smaller salvage tugs and you’ll see that $no. get cut in half. Also MSC pay really isn’t that good compared to commercial. If you’re on a MSC tug with no overtime you’ll be making less than the crappiest AMO commercial contract (for officers at least). Since I quit MSC I pull way more $$$ per hour worked, its just that my annual gross is less since I’m not at sea all year.

Damn. Thats almost worth going MSC for a while and getting debt free.

That can’t be 3rd mate pay for 2 weeks… i mean that is a check for 2 weeks but… i know plenty of 3rd Mates and the ones i know normally GROSS 4500-6000 and they typically don’t get that much OT because they are on watch… and the 3rd mates and i that i know have been on AOE/LCC/AKE and those are what MSC call premium ships. as long as you stay away from tankers your good…the pay is really bad on tankers or should i say you have to work alot of OT hours just to get close to making what you get on a premium ship without that much OT…
