What are you an accountant or something? I said “about” $10k per month. My paycheck, depending on duty nights and OT are anywhere from “about” $4500-$5500 twice a month. That is “about” $10,000 per month. And yes, this is ROS.
When we guys like that at my company they run as mate until they prove them selves.
Who is ros?
Good for you, keep grinding!
ROS - Reduced Operating Status
RTBU group at Kirby Offshore just ratified a 2 year extension at 11%, 10%.
Thank you for this interesting post.
10-11% each year is about where it needs to be. Inflation may be theoretically declining, but the there is a lot of catching up to be done.
The pool of licensed mariners is only going to get smaller as the last of the boomers retire, and the younger generations have a disdain for seagoing careers.
I seriously wonder why? If you stick with it for 5-10 years and apply yourself you can make as much or more than any other profession with the same educational qualifications. You can also save money as you don’t have the expenses of someone on shore full time.
You must be “single, never married” then. Alimony to an ex-wife and supporting a home and family are year round expenses.
I found that even when married I spent less money when I was at sea than I did when I was home.
I was referring to MARAD activations, when they go from ROS to FOS. You’d be hard pressed to make more than that.
That’s because your wife was spending it for you. With Jody.
Valid point.
I’m not here to beat anyone up, I was just commenting on Jynxs’ comment that MARAD is top tier. I have the contract for Horn, Henry and Hudson and comparing apples to apples with others, it’s not. ROS or FOS. Factor in everything equally and it’s significantly lower than almost all MEBA contracts.
For CE MARAD vs- an unknown Tanker company, the 2 for 30 vacation alone is a net loss of 84,989.41/year, if 182.5 days worked.
That’s the ROS contract. In FOS it’s 30/30 vacation.
That would be a significant improvement. How often are they FOS vs ROS?
I think the issue is you’re not really comparing apples to apples. The FOS wages apply when the ship is in FOS status. You can read what that means in the contract.
Depends on the ship. Some are in FOS often, some not so often.
I think maybe you don’t have a full grasp of how the system/contract works.
I did the same. Real humbling eye-opener. (it sucked)
That’s nonsense. No one can afford to require licensed people (which they need to hire today) to spend years on deck before moving up.
Working on deck is no longer the route to the wheelhouse.
Today, going to an Academy is the primary route to a tugboat wheelhouse.
Many companies will hire any warm body with a license for a Mate of Towing position.
Crowley for example.
Centerline recently advertised that they were looking to hire and train licensed Mates with no towing experience and no towing endorsement.
Fishermen with Mate of Uninspected Towing Vessels 3000 tons typically make the transition to Mate of Towing as soon as they get their new towing endorsement.
If some tugboat company is telling you that they want you to spend years on deck before moving up to Mate, that’s not the real reason that they are not hiring you.
They think that there is something else wrong with you. Maybe you are too old, too fat, you act like a pain-in-the-ass, you put your pronouns on your resume, or whatever. The real reason they are telling you that you will have to work on deck for years is that they simply do not want to hire you.
If you have Mate of Towing, and you are otherwise a desirable employee, you will be on the fast track to the wheelhouse.
All I know is what they told me. Yes, maybe I’m too old/fat, but I can still run a boat.
I’m not interested in the inland towing sector. Harbor tugs or offshore would be OK.
I’d be OK with working AB for a couple of months, but not 2-3 years.
I really prefer working offshore- dive boats, construction, ROV work, etc.
