DO you need to take a refresher course for these? Or are they good forever as long as you renew them. I called the NMC and one lady said yes you do need to refresh every five years and one lady said no you don’t:confused:
I checked some school websites and I did not see any med pic refresher courses like you would radar.
Also I did not know you need to take a refresher course for STCW bst? is this true and is it every 5 years? Kinda seems stupid you would need to refresh something easy like bst that a child could do but never have to refresh something major like med pic/
USCG Policy Letter 9-99 only mentions a refresher, or maintaining a standard of competency, for the Elementary First Aid (i.e. BST) level of medical training. More on that in a second.
The sections in that Policy Letter that discuss the training required for MED-PRO and MED-PIC do not mention any type of renewal, refresher or continued competency requirement.
Accordingly, the certs that we issue for MED-PRO and MED-PIC at PMI do not have expiration dates.
In order to demonstrate that you have ‘maintained competency’ in BST, you must either take a refresher course (generally 3 days) every 5 years, or you must show that you have sailed at least 360 days beyond the boundary line during the previous 5 years. See USCG Policy Letter 12-01 for further clarification.

You do not have to take a refresher course to renew your STCW certifications. However, your point about retaining proficiency without re-training is valid.
