So I finally heard from the school. It turns out that it had to do with the approval date from the CG. I guess the approval certificate was dated 1 week later than the date I took the course. So she has got the USCG to change the approval date to cover my dates, and given me a certificate to show this… Which I have sent to NMC and am awaiting to hear back from them… Yikes.
In other words, the school gave the course before it was approved. It seems NMC has made arrangements to accept the premature classes so as not to prejudice unknowing students like yourself, but the school should known better than to give a course prior to the effective date of the approval. They should have made those arrangements with NMC before they gave the class, not after NMC caught them at it (sticking you in the middle of it).

While I agree that it shouldn’t have happened, I can understand how it happened. I expect that they submitted their course for approval them scheduled it for a few months or so (giving the NMC plenty of time to approve them) so people had time to register. Then, the NMC being government bureaucracy took much longer than any reasonable person could possibly expect.
It’s disappointing to hear you had an issue at Northeast Maritime. I attended Care provider and PIC recently before the teaching swap. The Courses were previously taught by a 3rd party that flew in from NOLA. Workplace Nurses LLC. Awesome instructors. I felt it was worth every penny at the end of both. Hope no one else runs into this problem.
I have taken both the med-care and med-pic thru NE and was extremely satisfied with the instructor, the PIC was actually done in Gretna at his personal residence thru NE.
Which gets me to why I refuse to ever spend 1 fucking cent of my own money @ MAMA again. I had taken my med-care but the PIC from NE was basically a random shot in the dark scheduled class, so while taking my advanced FF @ MA I stopped at the desk and said “I see you have a PIC class scheduled for next week, if you have room I want to attend”. The answer I got was “you don’t need that your an engineer” and the guy walked away. I’m literally standing there money in hand @ your desk trying to take a class, WTF. Strike 2 was when I asked about the Chief Limited Prep they where running at the time. Asked the instructor a few basic questions, but I really wanted to make sure that I would have some assistance on the electrical which is my weakest point. Note, I’m wearing a Houston Pilots camouflage hat. I’m 2.5hrs from Quebec but was working in the gulf, this shitheads starts in how "all you GOM guys can’t wire a extension cord, and about 3 other dumb ass shit head comments, I walked away shaking my head. Standing in your lobby, already paid for 1 class out of my pocket and ready to throw down for 2 more. Fuck MAMA.

They could have sent an e-mail or made a phone call as soon as they received the approval. As long as the approval has been granted, NMC routinely accommodates these requests. The school either neglected to notice the dates of their approval, or did and chose to take their chances. This is not the same as a mariner who deals with NMC once every five years. This school has been around for over 20 years and deals with NMC on a regular basis. They know, oer should know how long it takes for NMC to evaluate and approve a course.
What is your basis for assuming the fault was NMC’s? Do you know when the course was submitted for approval? As far as “overnment bureaucracy” NMC typically responds faster than non-governmental entities doing the same thing (DNV on VSO courses, Nauticai Institute for DP training)

I know no details about the case and never said the fault was the NMC’s. Ultimately the school should have realized the approval hadn’t been granted and been in contact with the NMC about it. I was just saying I could see how the screw up happened on the school’s part (holding a class before the approval). Maybe NMC approvals happen relatively quickly and I’m totally off base, but I figured it was a safe assumption that a government entity would take a while to approve something like that.

Sure you did, when you wrote “the NMC being government bureaucracy took much longer than any reasonable person could possibly expect.” I also might not always agree with the boys in blue, but come on Capt, give them a little leeway once in a while. It is a safe assumption that there are actual people there who do care both about mariners and their jobs.

That isn’t the fault of the NMC, government bureaucracy is what it is. Also, no matter how long the NMC took it doesn’t make it their fault. The school knew they weren’t approved yet when the class happened and should have worked something out in advance with the NMC.
All I was saying is I can see that scenario being how this all went down. As Chris Rock said about OJ Simpson, “I’m not saying he did it, but I understand.”
