Massachusetts Maritime Receives Gift From Clean Harbors Environmental Services For Na

[I]Buzzards Bay, Mass. – The Massachusetts Maritime Academy has received a pledge from Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. of Norwell, Mass. in the amount of $1.5 million dollars for naming rights to its contiguous athletic stadium and gymnasium complex. The acceptance of the pledge, which was presented by Clean Harbors Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Alan S. McKim, was approved unanimously earlier this morning by the school’s Board of Trustees and announced by Admiral Richard G. Gurnon, President of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

The Clean Harbors Athletic Center will be comprised of the athletic stadium, which is the current home of Commander Edward A. Ellis Field, as well as all athletic and recreation facilities currently housed in Alumni Gymnasium. Gift monies received from Clean Harbors will be used for complete renovation of stadium seating, additional construction, renovation and expansion of existing men’s and women’s locker room and training facilities in Alumni Gymnasium itself as well as the construction of a new Athletic Media Center contained in the Gymnasium structure overlooking the stadium.

“Clean Harbors has been a consistent supporter of the Academy’s training mission and has maintained a long term educational and career development relationship with the Academy by providing in-service training and equipment to the Academy’s students and graduates for the past 20 years,” Chairman McKim said. “Many of those students later joined the company after graduating and became career Clean Harbors’ employees rising to senior positions in the company.”

Massachusetts Maritime sponsors 18 NCAA Division III varsity sports as a member of the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference, and at the same time the Academy offers a wide range of intramural and recreational activities for its entire student body. The stadium at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center serves as the competitive home for Buccaneer football, men’s & women’s soccer as well as men’s & women’s lacrosse, while the Center’s gymnasium houses the Buccaneer volleyball team as well as expanded locker room, weight training and meeting facilities. The new Athletic Media Center will be housed inside the Clean Harbors Athletic Center and will provide a state-of-the-art facility for all media who cover Academy athletics on a daily basis.

The first phase of construction for the Clean Harbors Athletic Center is slated to begin in November 2009, with completion of the entire project slated for late Summer 2010.
