Looking for information

I’m a new guy from Alabama and I have been lurking for a little while now. Finally joined the forum. I am interested in a career change and have always been enthralled by a career at sea. I have been emailing the workboat academy about their school, and was looking for a little bit more information. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on books about being a mariner? I have been discussing the change with my wife. She’s not real thrilled with the idea of me being gone for weeks at a time. I was wanting some suggestions on books or websites to give her to read about the lifestyle. Any help anyone could give would be helpful. Thank you for your time and help.

Derrick

If you decide to undergo a career change and become a mariner and you’re currently married, also expect to undergo a relationship change and become single.

and with the current state of the industry you might have better luck with your wife if you underwent a gender change

Death Ship by B. Traven

“Last American Sailors” is pretty accurate.

Looks like he broke the first commandment: The first rule of Merchant Mariner Club is, “Thou shalt not talk about Merchant Mariner Club”

Actually though, the best book I ever read about what we do for a living is “The Voyage of the Rose City”. You should also search for the books and movie threads we have on here where these things are discussed at much greater length.

I appreciate the suggestions on books and movies. Also enjoyed the humorous responses about dealing with the wife. I tried searching for movies and books, but the threads I got back were always the same, but never saw anything about books. Even if I tried different search terms I always got back the same results. It may be my phone causing issues with the site. It wouldn’t be the first time it caused problems. Just wanted to say a big thank you for the information provided.

In the industry we just call this 2 birds 1 stone…

Good book suggestions above.
