Living as an expat while being a Mariner

I’m working in a opportunity to get a Green Card so I can get an QMED opportunity in US. I’m actually live in Brazil and work as 1st Engineer. But, unfortunately I dont have security and life quality! Hope I get that opportunitty there!

Sorry but you have to be a full US Citizen to work in the Merchant Marine.

That is incorrect. You have to be a US Citizen to be an officer but can be a Temporary or Permanent Resident with permission to work as an unliencenced rating like QMED. But really @pierrefuly, go work with a better Brasilian company if you don’t like your 1AE job. They have to be higher paying officer jobs in Brasil that you’d like more than QMED jobs in the US. Brasilian food is better, healthier & you’d live longer. The union mandated 6 months per year can’t be beat either. Schedules in the US are too long for many people. Good luck.

No you don’t. See 46 CFR 10.221(a)(2).

Ok. I just knew about licensed MMC and not the unlicensed for Green Card. I know SIU Apprenticeship School requires US Citizenship and so does MSC. Any other options for non Us Citizens?

Lots of options for unlicensed green card holders: unions (but maybe not the union school), tugs, barges, OSVs, drill rigs, construction, dredging, fishing, etc etc.

Many companies love to hire recent immigrants that work cheaper.

Some companies like to hire skilled foreign officers with green cards as unlicensed ratings. I’ve generally had good experiences with these guys.

I’ve known plenty of people who live overseas because they have family or for cost of living. You can buy run down vacant houses in many small European towns for a low price with the caveat that you fix it up within x number of months. Doing so ends up costing far less than a new home. Imagine living in a tiny Italian fishing village. You have to weigh the pros and cons though. Retirees need to consider access to definitive health care (hospitals, clinics) and the costs.

I don’t think he was referring to his job quality but to actually living in Brazil being bad.

That’s correct Captain! Brazilian offshore market is going well even with pandemic. But the high brazilian living cost, bad politicians, unstable economic. Giving a better opportunity to my daghter will worth the challenge of beginning as QMED, no doubt about it.
