Laser Rust Remover?

Did anyone else see the video on Facebook? Someone shared it to one of the tug-boating groups with the caption “An AB’s best friend!” I can’t tell if it’s a scam or not but it looks mighty real. It’s a hand-held device that shoots about a 4" wide beam and obliterates rust right down to bare metal. In the video the piece the guy was working on looked like part of an old cast-iron wood stove. It only took about 2 minutes flat to go from orange to gray right before your eyes! Is this thing for real?

Not sure if it is-but I want one!

If it is real I can’t imagine no one other than some Facebook video is talking about it.

Was the ShamWow guy the one demonstrating it?

I don’t know what the original video is, but this seems to match the description. The whole thing seems like a load of hogwash.

Hmmm… http://www.cleanlaser.de/wEnglish/index.php

Bet you could buy a lot of needle guns for the price of one of them. Either way, it’s still probably too loud to sleep if they’re cleaning the deck above your bed.

I wonder how it would handle thicker scale or rust and paint togsther?

Yup, that’s the one. Some guy commented and said they cost like $100,000 a piece

Maybe … looks to me like you would clean the pig and make pork rinds at the same time. The pig might not like it much though.

After looking a little more it seems to be a process of laser ablation. I found an article about a Trumpf TruMicro 7050 machine: http://www.photonics.com/m/Article.aspx?AID=56090

Maybe there is a technical document published somewhere. Nevertheless, the fact that Trumpf has a machine and a video gives me some validity that this technology exists.

It’s just spray painting guys!!
No, really… looks great… I think it’s expensive as it’s anti matter powered. I think i want about 4 of those.

Although one can see ‘smoke’ in one of the shots this isn’t lazer but ED, electro static discharge of some kind which basically vaporizes the crap on the surface, in theory is should get down to new metal. Or maybe it’s just a fancy spray paint job? not!
