Jones Act Waiver Article

Evidently, it doesn’t work to appreciably reduce prices at the pump.

I was told different :thinking:

Who was ever stupid enough to believe it would? Rhetorical question of course, we all know who.

Don’t summon him!

I was just getting curious about the status of this waiver period. Was trying to find a list of any vessels which may have moved cargo under the waiver and luckily ChatGPT to the rescue.

For anyone interested who didn’t already know, the waiver lists the reporting requirement (bold emphasis added):

Please note that, in accordance with 46 U.S.C. 501(c), no later than 10 days after the date of conclusion of the voyage of a vessel that is operated under this waiver, the owner or operator of the vessel and the individual requesting such waiver (if not the owner or operator of the vessel) shall submit to the Maritime Administrator a report including the following:

  • The name and flag of the vessel;

  • The name of the owner and operator of the vessel;

  • The dates of the voyage;

  • Any relevant ports of call;

  • A description of the cargo carried;

  • An explanation as to why the waiver was in the interest of national defense; and

  • Any other information the Maritime Administrator determines necessary.

Please report this information to: marad.milcargo@dot.gov. Within 48 hours after receiving this information, the Maritime Administrator shall publish such report on an appropriate website of the Department of Transportation.

As for that “appropriate website” it is this one: https://www.maritime.dot.gov/ports/domestic-shipping/domestic-shipping

And toward the bottom are the reports for ships who have operated on this current waiver. The most recent being from yesterday (April 14, 2026)

https://www.maritime.dot.gov/ports/domestic-shipping/20260414-0900-501c-waiver-report

It shows seven ships so far within the reporting window as having taken advantage of the waiver. Four carrying gasoline. One of which was loaded two months before the waiver was even issued. Three operated west coast, three gulf coast, one east coast. Variety of flags. Zero impact.

Thank you for sharing this.
