This is an example of what I meant with fully tuberized. A real boat anchor.
Now we are talking. This Furuno Loran C type LC-90 is perfectly throwable, it might even float.

The LC-90’s dimensions are 24x14x9 cm = 2898 ㎤︎ = 2.898 ltr. With a density of surface seawater of about 1020 kg/㎥︎ the weight of the amount of displaced seawater is 2.96 kg. As the weight of the equipment is 2.3 kg it will indeed float!
I remember when we unbolted and float tested the RDF. In its place went a GPS as I recall.
Just FYI:
Airplanes and boats with 24 volt batteries will see 28 volts when the engine(s) are on. Just like 12 volt boats see about 14 volts with engines on. No “converting” needed between 24 and 28. I think your shop was setting them up for 32 volt systems, which would be about 35.5 underway.
I still have an early 1970’s LORAN A, an excellent Kelvin Hughes Type 17 Radar, an electro/mechanical Wood Freeman autopilot, and a 1930’s ships wheel out in the barn. I’m saving them for my retirement “pilothouse” overlooking the bay.
Was this thing still coal-fired ?
I started in the Mediterranean with radio direction finding. When the electric LORAN-C became a cryptic Lat/Lon finder, I was happy…
We still had a lot of shipping down here in the 60’s that had a magnetic compass, DF, and an echo sounder. Landfall in winter was usually a DF bearing crossing the 50 fathom line. One vessel that I sailed on had a sounding machine on deck. I cleaned it up for one master and the next one told me to get rid of it. It made a worthwhile contribution to the second mates benevolent fund in Singapore.
Yes, all copper!
Believe “Marine Warrant Officer” refers to the US Army maritime division which at one time included large ships of substantial tonnage and has it’s own internal licensing structure. The equivalent deck and engine officers are given Warrant officer ranks. Think Ft Eustis, VA is one of their commands. On another angle, in the naval services if passed up twice and you were a mustang/ maverick, an option that few would take is revert to your former enlisted rank. In the case of Mavericks, may have included former Warrant rank, I do not know?
My ship doesn’t even have a gyro compass repeater we can shoot a bearing off of or a sextant. Yet the the chief mate and captain always go on rants about how the new generation not knowing how to navigate while solely using ARPA for collision avoidance. And no, my boat isn’t just in Gulf, we only do international voyages.
